  • ***ECR*** Research Development Drop-in Session: Joe Butler, Research Development Associate in RED will be available in a ‘virtual’ drop in session at this link - Joe primarily supports early career researchers in developing fellowship and similar personal awards, and will be available to answer questions around your own applications, or around the grant application process generally. 10am-12pm, 2 February.
  • Wellcome research on successful interventions for youth anxiety and depressionWellcome is commissioning research teams from around the world to review the evidence for one ‘active ingredient’ – or key factor – underpinning successful interventions for youth anxiety and depression. Join their webinar on Tuesday 9 February 2021.
  • ***ECR*** Introduction to Research Grant Applications: Health and Life Sciences – The Research Development Team (based within RED) will be running a Workshop titled “Introduction to Research Grant Applications” which will be offered to colleagues within the Faculties of Health and Life Sciences. This workshop is aimed at those new to applying for research funding and who plan to submit a proposal during the next year or so. To book a place, please register here. Any questions, please contact Sandra and Joe at rda-healthlife@bristol.ac.uk. This will take place via Zoom over two sessions, 10:00 – 11:00, Friday 26 February and 10:00 – 11:00, Friday 5 March.

  • Call notification: Newton Fund opportunities. Various research funding available. All expenditure and activity must be ODA compliant. If you are interested in applying to any of these schemes, please let the rd-international@bristol.ac.uk team know. Various deadlines.
  • UKRI Statement - Coronavirus and funded research. UKRI have released a statement on the impact of the coronavirus and funded research.

  • PHSI and Migration Mobilities Bristol collaboration opportunities workshop to focus on mental health, trauma, stress, health, ageing and migration. If interested in getting involved, please contact gemma.crawford@bristol.ac.uk.
  • Award Management Update: The new Worktribe system to replace the fEC project costing tool now well underway. A demo system is expected to be available end of February.
  • Cancer Grand Challenges: Welcoming applications to address one of the challenges (see the list below) from teams working across a breadth of disciplines and institutions including but not limited to: the biomedical sciences, software development and technology, engineering and physical sciences, behavioural, health, population and social sciences. Internal Deadline: Anyone wishing to take part in a Cancer Grand Challenge team must express their interest to their Head of School, their finance contact, and Zoe Holland (zoe.holland@bristol.ac.uk), as early as possible and at the latest 2 months prior to the deadline (i.e. 22 Feb 2021)
  • ***REMINDER*** Rosetrees Trust Interdisciplinary Award 2021: To develop new collaborative studies between researchers in the fields of medicine and engineering including the field of healthcare technology. Please complete an internal application form (available to download from the EBI website ) and return it to Nina Couzin  nina.couzin@bristol.ac.uk. The application form contains full details of the call including the assessment criteria. Deadline 10am Tuesday 2 February 2021. 
  • ***REMINDER*** NBIC Fourth POC Funding Callprojects that establish the feasibility of a concept, idea or technology from any application sector, which is aimed at preventing, detecting, managing or engineering biofilms. These projects should be collaborative between a research institution and commercial partner (or other customer stakeholder).  Full details of this funding call can be found on NBIC’s POC funding webpage, which also includes eligibility details, FAQ’s, Intellectual Property and finance guidelines. Deadline: 23:59pm 2 February 2021
  • GCRF UKRI-JST-DOST research collaborations in south east Asia: Proposals are invited which will connect currently or recently (within the last 3 years) active projects focused on south east Asia. For the purposes of this call, eligible countries of south east Asia are Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam.  Please see the call webpage for further information.   • David Telling Charitable Trust research funding opportunities: The David Telling trust is delighted to announce 3 calls for funding for research proposals within UHBW and NBT. Please find information and an application form here and the closing date for applications will be Friday the 12 February 2021
  • NBIC 4th Proof of Concept Call: call for collaborative proposals for Proof of Concept (POC) projects from NBIC partners who have the experience and knowledge necessary to investigate and exploit areas in which biofilms play a central part. Contact nbic@biofilms.ac.uk if you have any questions. The application portal will open no later than 04/01/2021 and close at 23:59pm on 12 February 2021.
  • NIHR Global Health Groups and Units - internal process: The NIHR has calls out for Global Health Research Units and Global Health Research Groups, to support delivery of applied health research that will improve health outcomes for people living in lower- and middle-income countries (LMICs), and strengthen crucial research capability in resource-poor settings.The NIHR closing date for applications is 1pm GMT on 18 May 2021. An internal process has been put in place for these calls; see below timelines. More information is available here. See 'Events' for webinar details. Internal deadline for expressions of interest: midday 22 Feb 2021
  • Internal Global Challenges Ad Hoc scheme 2020/21: This scheme is open for applications which will develop equitable research partnerships with colleagues in Lower and Middle Income Countries.  All activities and expenditure must take place before 31st July 2021. The application form and scheme guidance and FAQS are available on our Global Challenges SharePoint site. Researchers considering applying to this scheme may find it helpful to refer our ODA toolkit. Please contact the Research Development (International) team if you have any queries about this scheme. Deadline(s):  23 February 2021.
  • Internal Funding Call Notification: QR GCRF Research Workshops: This call aims to support Bristol researchers and their overseas partners run workshops which focus on tackling development challenges and have the potential to create impact in Lower and Middle Income countries (LMIC).  Applicants can run either a physical or an online workshop, but contingency plans must be in place should restrictions due to the response to COVID-19 prevent physical workshops taking place. Please contact rd-international@bristol.ac.uk if you have any queries about this call. Deadline(s): 23 February 2021. 
  • ***ECR*** Daniel Turnberg UK/Middle East Travel Fellowships: These Fellowships provide up to £4,000 for one month (or £9,000 for up to three months), to cover travel and subsistence for a research project. Funding is designed to enable early-career researchers in the UK and the Middle East to meet leading researchers in their field, learn new techniques, and develop ideas for longer-term collaborations. Deadline 1 March 2021.
  • Spring 2021 UHBW Research Capability Funding and Above and Beyond grants now open: Please find the application form and further guidance. Please read the guidance and then contact Caroline Nash or Elinor Griffiths with any queries: 0117 34 29897/29883 Email: funding@uhbw.nhs.uk. Grant applications leading to: NIHR Project and Programme grants: Considered on a rolling basis NO DEADLINE.   • Early deadlines: ERC Starting and Consolidator Grant schemes: Assuming access to the ERC is maintained, ERC Starting and Consolidator grant schemes are likely to be amongst the first deadlines under Horizon Europe. If you are interested in applying to either scheme, please contact the EU Research Team Mailbox at eu-research@bristol.ac.uk so that we can keep you updated with the latest developments and guide you through the UoB process. Provisional deadlines are as follows: Starting Grant: 9 March 2021. Consolidator Grant: 20 April 2021.
  • New 3-year PhD Studentship (Medical Research) opportunity: The Humane Research Trust (THRT) has a new opportunity to apply for a funded 3yr PhD studentship. The Trust are seeking applications from lecturers at UK universities, who were appointed in the last 5 years, to supervise a PhD project “Les Rhoades Memorial PhD Studentship”. The 3-year PhD studentship will be funded, including bench fees, consumables and stipend, to a total grant of £40,000 per annum. The closing date for applications is April 30 2021.

Bristol Clear offers researchers a wide range of support, including early career researcher development, the Vice-Chancellor’s Fellowship Scheme, mentoring and training.
 
This year they have created a 'research career road map' and have matched the workshops to the level you may be in your career as well as to the four domains of Vitae's Researcher Development Framework.
