On Tumleo Island near Aitape town, Oral Bible Storying instructor Dennis (I don't know his surname) enthusiastically explained how Oral Bible Storying can be the first step in getting the Bible in the local language.

Expanding, Pioneering, Translating

Our team is involved in a lot of things, but today I'm especially excited about these three.

EXPANDING. Last week, some team members traveled with Oral Bible Storying instructor, Dennis (photo above), to at least 17 different villages in several different languages inviting people to participate in Oral Bible Storying workshops later this year. This is the first step toward translating the Bible into these languages.

Praise the Lord for the positive response our team has received in many places.

Please Pray that local leaders in each language community will make wise decisions about this.

Pioneering.
Helping test the innovative scripture typesetting software has been both fun and frustrating. We have discovered enough problems with producing diglot scriptures that the developers decided to completely rewrite that part of the program.

Praise the Lord with us for the brilliant developers working on this.
Please pray that he would guide them in this work and that we would be able to typeset diglot scriptures soon.

Translating. While they do that, I'm working with some other team members to help the Arop team improve their translation of John 13-19 so the other translators can use it as a guide for their translations at a workshop to start Feb 7th.

Praise the Lord
with us for the progress we have made on these chapters despite all the ways COVID-19 has clobbered our schedule.

Please pray that the Lord would guide us and enable us to get as many of these chapters as possible ready by Feb 7.

Please pray that Arop translator Emil Ninkure would be available to spend significant time on these chapters despite his many other church and community responsibilities.

I count it a privilege to be part of this team bringing God's Word to people who have never had it in their languages before. And it's a privilege to partner with you in this work. May we all bring glory to Jesus in all we do.

What we do
Since 1987 we have been training local Papua New Guinean church leaders to translate the Bible into their own languages and coaching them through the process from first draft to publication.

We serve in the Aitape West Translation Project, which is producing and distributing Bible translations in 11 languages in print, electronic, audio, and video form; training local people to use the translations; and training the local translators to help other translators do the same in still more languages.

To learn more
We have written about how a tsunami changed the face of Bible translation in Papua New Guinea in our bookSleeping Coconuts. It is available here on Kindle or here in paperback.

Wycliffe has released a short film called "Arop" about this amazing story. The one-minute book trailer is here
