Prayer for the Nation

In the week that the number of COVID- related deaths in the UK exceeded 100,000, so both Archbishops are inviting everyone to call on God in Prayer for the Nation.

Starting on 1 February you are invited to set aside time every evening to pray, particularly at 6pm each day.

The Archbishops issued this renewed call to prayer outlined in their most recent letter to clergy, released earlier this week.

There will be a rolling seven day of themes for prayers, as follows:

  • Sunday - Family, friends and loved ones
  • Monday - Schools and colleges, children and young people
  • Tuesday - Elderly, isolated and vulnerable
  • Wednesday - Businesses, the workplace and economic wellbeing
  • Thursday - The NHS and other key workers
  • Friday - National and local governments
  • Saturday - All who are grieving and all suffering with physical and mental ill-health.
Prayer resources, including new weekly prayers, daily biddings, family prayers and a prayer booklet (downloadable as a PDF) are all available by clicking here, whilst a range of video reflections from senior church leaders on YouTube praying for specific daily themes and also general ‘prayers for the nation can be viewed by clicking here.

        God for All Lent Resources

A reminder that in just over a week's time, special God for All Lent resources will be available for all churches and congregations.

Bishop Emma is preparing the resources which based around the refreshed God for All vision and its four key themes: follow daily, care deeply, speak boldly, tread gently.

They will be up uploaded to the God for All website, the week commencing 8 February and shall include:

  • sermon notes/sermons for each of the five Sundays of Lent, based on the lectionary Gospel reading for each Sunday, and introducing the four themes of the refreshed vision,
  • and some simple discussion materials/Bible study notes that follow up on each sermon (or could stand alone), and that could be used as part of a similar Lent course.

Northern Mission Centre

As we enter 2021 the shape of our training offer is changing. The Northern Mission Centre has been developed to build on the creative mission training events and networks established through Fresh Expressions in Cumbria and work with the Pioneer Enablers to support the whole church in innovative local mission.

Whether you are rooted in a time-honoured church that has been serving your village for hundreds of years, or a Fresh Expression recently established, NMC's vision is to help you serve and reach deeper into your communities as you seek to Follow Daily, Speak Boldly, Care Deeply and Tread Gently.

Last year we piloted the Certificate in Pioneer Mission with Church Mission Society with 17 participants currently enrolled. It’s great to see the diversity of mission participants are engaging with, through the arts, children and families, young people and older both in Fresh Expressions and in time-honoured churches. Last week we ran the first Taster event for next years course, there’s another one in April, and you can find out more here.

We are also looking at other creative spaces in which to explore mission together. A key value for the NMC is our shared learning experience. It fosters a community of ideas and practices which benefit all. One idea is to develop a theme of Crossing Points, looking at the space where mission meets local opportunities. For example the arts seem to be growing locally with several new projects emerging. But where, and how, do arts and mission meet?

We'd love it if you'd complete this five minute online poll to help us identify some key ideas you may want to explore on the theme of Crossing Points.

           Excepted Charity Status

Most of our PCCs have what is known as ‘Excepted’ Charity status with the Charitable Commission.

PCCs with an income of under £100,000 each year do not have to fully register with the Charity Commission, receive a registered charity number or appear on the charity register .

This excepted status was due to end on 31 March 2021 but we have been advising that this deadline was likely to be extended. We can confirm that the deadline has now been extended to the 31 March 2031.

Whilst we are waiting for details to be announced, we anticipate there will be some sort of registration process over the course of the next 10 years, to get all PCCs registered before the new deadline. We’ll keep you updated as we learn more.

New Digital Support Group

More than 60 people have already joined a new God for All Digital Support Facebook group.

It’s a place to share ideas and tips, and to seek advice from each other. Topics could include live-streaming, social media, Zoom, church websites, training opportunities, digital evangelism and more.

      Good Shepherd MAT Expands

Lamplugh CE Primary School in West Cumbria will be welcomed into the Good Shepherd Trust family of schools with a virtual celebration event on Monday 1 February.

The community were keen to reflect the school’s history and location and have chosen to be known as Kirkland CE Academy, a new name for a new chapter in the life of the school.

The Good Shepherd Trust will work with staff, governors parents and children to ensure the school remains “a warm, caring and happy place to learn” (OFSTED, May 2019) whilst delivering the best possible outcomes for its pupils.

Claire Render, CEO of the Good Shepherd Trust, said: “We are thrilled to welcome Kirkland CE Academy into our Trust and we look forward to working with the staff, the local governing board, parents and children as the school thrives and grows.”
