Welcome to this week's issue of The Birthday Workbook!
This week, we read about 12-year-old Maeve Low's journey with Burkitt's Lymphoma, a type of cancer, which she was diagnosed with when she was three years old.
Before you read the article:
On a piece of paper, draw the first thing that comes to your mind when you think about Cancer. What are the three most immediate emotions that you would associate with Cancer. If you’re comfortable, share both your drawing and emotions with your classmates.
Now, watch the following video and answer these questions:
- What struck you most about the video?
- In your opinion, how does story-telling help a person process pain?
After reading the article, consider the following questions:
- Maeve shared that “Clouds are like fear. They can block your vision from seeing all the happy things behind them.” Take some time to reflect about the clouds in your life. What are they? And what are the clouds blocking you from seeing?
- Maeve further shared that “finally, rain came. Rain washed away everything negative.” What is she referring to as the rain in her article?
- Maeve explained that “because of cancer”, she is “able to encourage others” and “be the rain for them.” How have you turned a painful experience into one of healing and hope for others? List two additional occasions when you were “the rain” for others.
Additional Activity:
- Write a letter to Maeve with your responses to the above reflection questions. Send it to us at thebirthdaycollective@gmail.com and we'll help to send it to Maeve for you!
