Greetings!

I have mentioned the thousands of memory drawings I did while working in a nursing home before, but until now, I had not figured out a way of showing them that felt appropriate. I have found one now: I am publishing a selection of them in a handmade zine, available here: https://www.patreon.com/care_full_bodies
They are in many ways a radical departure from the drawings I have shown on this newsletter - they were done from memory, not observation, and are rough and brutal on first sight, while infinitely tender in their aims. In other words, my work does not fit this format anymore, and after having run it for 10 years I will close this newsletter down.
Here is the description from the Patreon page for this project, if any of you want to follow me on to those new shores in print:

CARE FULL BODIES

I have spent the last three years working as a carer in a nursing home. After every shift I sat down to draw my memories from that day. The resulting drawings are different from any drawings I have done before; they show a lot of things that we usually prefer not to look at, not to think about, maybe not even want to be aware they exist; how we touch each other, how we treat each other when we are in need.

The purpose of Care Full Bodies is to bring these drawings into the world, and to the people that might need to see them, in a way that is appropriate and respectful to everyone involved: the people memories of whom are depicted in them as well as the people looking at them. It would not do to expose them to the casual gaze we usually point at things on our screens, and nobody should encounter them by surprise, without warning. Another person's frailty has no place in anyone's Instagram feed, should not randomly pop up in your timeline or "suggestions". There is too much vulnerability here for a casual encounter. At the same time I do believe that there _should_ be an encounter. That these drawings can contribute to our understanding of old age, illness and death, however far from it we may feel ourselves to be, and it is my deep desire that this increased awareness may be of help to someone who is doing their being ill, weak, or dying right now.

These drawings can do their part the best when they are met away from screens, on paper, held in hand or going from one person's hand to another, in a form that everybody can open or close at their own discretion. Thus I am putting them into zines, breaking down the mass of overall ca. 2000 drawings into little selections of 16 drawings at a time, one volume per month in 2021. There won't be a gallery of them here either, no pictures in your email inbox. And nobody will receive just one single piece - the minimum you'll get is two copies of each volume, one to keep and one to give away. Each copy is signed and numbered by hand.

Maybe at some point I'll find other ways to show them that feel right, but for now this is the only way to see them (except coming to visit my studio in person).

Be well, and thank you for reading all these years! May your 2021 be as healthy and happy as can be considering all the things that are going on.
