Q&T Book Club

PPR launched a 12-week Book Club for Queer & Trans Youth in December 2020. The group met weekly to read Akwaeke Emezi’s debut young-adult novel, Pet. They celebrated their reading accomplishment with a "fantasy/speculative-fiction-themed" costume-party on April 5, 2021.

Parkdale Project Read congratulates the group, facilitators and our book club partners for making this project possible:

SOY (Supporting Our Youth) Program - an innovative community development program supporting the health and well-being of all queer and trans spectrum youth under 29 (through Sherbourne Health)

Another Story Bookshop - a local and independent bookstore focusing on themes of social justice, equity, and diversity.

We look forward to future book clubs and partnerships!

Learning with Science Sam
Dr. Samantha Yammine (also known as Science Sam) returned to PPR on Tuesday April 6th. She is a Biologist and guest science expert on Netflix, TVO Kids!, CBC GEM, and CBC Radio.

For this workshop, we gathered questions from learners and Dr. Yammine responded with information about the different vaccine options and how to access local vaccine clinics. Learners found her presentation very helpful and clear in language and design.

Many thanks to Dr. Yammine for helping us understand the often confusing news reports about COVID vaccines and this third wave.

Special thanks to Alicia Simmons, Ericka Delgado Flores and Nada Ibrahim for supporting this workshop designed for adult literacy learners.

The COVID-19 workshop series is Presented by Parkdale Project Read and funded by the Government of Canada.
Introducing BollyX
On February 25th, PPR Tutor, Bhavini Patel joined one of our online learning groups to introduce us to BollyX - a Bollywood-inspired dance-fitness program. Learners enjoyed the music and easy to follow dance moves. PPR has now integrated 15-minute BollyX breaks into our groups, so that we can move together virtually - thanks, Bhavini!
Staffing updates
Please join us in extending a warm welcome to Alicia Simmons, who transitioned from her role as Counselling and Resource Worker to her new role as Interim Collective Member on April 5th.

Alicia has been working at Parkdale Project Read since September 2020 focusing on online programming and worked closely with learners and program staff. She brings a great deal of knowledge and experience in person-centred adult literacy, community-based programming, counselling and resource development. We are grateful that Alicia will continue to support PPR community members in her new role.

We extend many thanks to Musammat Badrunnesha, who supported PPR as an Interim Collective Member from August 2020 to March 2021, while Kai Wong was on a leave of absence.

We welcomed back Kai on April 5th. Kai will now be sharing Finance and Fundraising duties with Reb Chevalier.

Program Update: The province of Ontario declared another State of Emergency on April 8, 2021 to address the COVID-19 crisis.
PPR has suspended all in-person meetings. Staff and volunteer tutors continue to support learners by phone, email, video-conference, and through weekly remote learning groups and online programming.
We'll keep everyone updated about any other changes.

Please stay safe and connected!
