COVID-19 updates for Guaymas, Sonora & Mexico

In Guaymas / San Carlos, as of yesterday, there were 2,510 cases (65 new cases last week), and 293 deaths (17 last week). There were 225 new cases in Sonora yesterday and 30 deaths. Of the 62,160 confirmed cases in Sonora, 53,775 have recovered, 5,145 died and 432 are hospitalized (down from 490 last week. 257 serious and 85 on ventilators).

As of February 2, the epidemiological traffic light for Guaymas / San Carlos is still red. On January 31, Guaymas Mayor Sara Valle announced that businesses could stay open until 10:00pm. So, these are the restrictions for the coming week:
 * Curfew from 10:00pm to 6:00am
 * No parties
 * No live music (consequently, we have removed the live Entertainment listings from the newsletter)
 * No large gatherings
 * Restaurants can continue to operate at 25% capacity, and will close at 10:00pm.
 * Businesses can be open until 10:00pm with all the precautions, like reduced capacity, mandatory masks, temperature checks and use of anti-bacterial gel.
 * The Malecon in Guaymas and the Mirador look-out in San Carlos are closed.

Today, Mexico had 4,384 new cases and 433 deaths for a total of 1,874,092 confirmed cases (1,436,482 have recovered and 278,077 are active) and 159,533 deceased.

Vaccines: Mexico's federal government announced that an online registration for adults over 60 to get vaccinated against COVID-19 started today (on this first day available, the system has been overwhelmed and social media users have been reporting glitches). You need to enter your CURP,  a contact phone number and email. Between now and April. the goal is to immunize people over 60. Here is detailed information on Mexico's vaccination plan.

The use of face masks is mandatory in public and “common use” spaces. For example, in restaurants, it is mandatory to wear a mask upon entry and when moving inside the establishment, only removing the mask to drink and eat.

Border travel restrictions continue through February 21, 2021. The travel restrictions have been in place since March 21, 2020 and apply to non-essential land traffic to and from the US and Mexico and the US and Canada. Mexico does not seem to be enforcing the restrictions, and US citizens have been able to drive across the border.

Note that flights between the US and Mexico are not affected by this restriction. As of January 26, 2021, international passengers flying to the US need to provide proof of a negative COVID-19 test (see the bottom of the newsletter for more details and info on where you can get tested).

Flights between Mexico and Canada have been suspended until at least April 30. Click here for info on the new requirements for travel to Canada.

El Cobijo Fundraiser

San Carlos Rotary Club is asking for your help! The senior citizen's home, El Cobijo, in San Jose is in desperate need of repairs for their residents' health and safety. Immediate repairs and upgrades are needed for: residents' uninhabitable living quarters damaged by Jimena in 2009, kitchen, sewage system, and heating. The Rotary Club is striving to raise $32,000 USD for these immediate needs, with future upgrades and repairs also planned.

Update February 1: Rebuilding efforts at El Cobijo began on January 29 as Rotarians Thonda Oliver, Dick Bauer, Julia Acuña, Steve Riedel, presented the first repair funds of 100,000 pesos to Oscar González, El Cobijo Administrator; Irene Ulloa Beltrán, Cobijo Director; and Rocio Perez, former Administrator. Rotarian Dick Bauer, represents the Fountain Hill Rotary Club of Arizona, which donated $5,000 USD to the project. Work will now begin at El Cobijo, with progress payments made every two weeks, upon inspection by our group of local Rotarians and an independent contractor. Watch an informative video on El Cobijo and Rotary's plans to repair it.

All donations make a difference, so please support our local seniors in need. There is much to be done. If you would like to contribute, please:

Bring your donation in Pesos (preferred) to Coldwell Banker. Julia Acuña or Beverly Langille will issue you a Rotary receipt. For checks, please write ‘El Cobijo Project’ in the memo section and make the checks payable to:

San Carlos "Foundation February" -- A little gift from your heart

February is often the time when we reach out to those we love and do a little something to bring joy to others. At the Foundation, we are reaching out to our beloved San Carlos with several projects that will bring a smile to many in our community. We hope you will join us in whatever way you can.

In 2014, the Sonora State Tourism designated San Carlos Pueblo Escenico - San Carlos Scenic Town. Pueblo Escenico President, Hugo Delgado Lomeli, is pleased to showcase the  new logo for the sign along Beltrones Boulevard. Thank you to Carlos Rafael Caballero of CR Publicidad for the updated logo and his assistant, Rey, for the installation. The signs welcome residents and visitors to our community.

In collaboration with Pueblo Escenico, the Foundation is helping to fundraise and provide assistance for 10 signs. We are in need of adoption of 7 more signs. The cost is 4500 pesos each. Please click to DONATE (tax deductible for US citizens) or email: info@sancarlosfoundation.com for more information. Your donation is greatly appreciated.

The Call to Action was heard in January by a number of people who have agreed to clean, repair and paint older street signs. These signs will be reused on side streets where signs are not currently available. Thank you to Creaciones Gift Shop and Studio on the main street Beltrones for hosting this activity during February. A lovely gift from the heart!

Work is underway to revamp and beautify the median between the Fruiteria and Tortuga's Restaurant. We hope to begin this project in February and are currently collecting donations for this beautiful project. To donate, see the information above. Detailed information on this project will be coming soon.

Thank you for your continued support or as a new supporter! Help us to help you enhance the beauty of San Carlos!

Support SBPA

Is the time up for SBPA? SBPA says "no", and we hope you will too!

Last year everyone wondered if SBPA could keep functioning in the "Time of COVID-19". We weren't able to do our Bake Sales, Bag of Books sales at Altered Tails, or the annual Luncheon/Fashion show.

Those critical events have been the lifeblood of SBPA fundraising for 10+ years. The scary part is the need for spay/neuter surgeries has not slowed down at all. In fact, demand has never been greater in Guaymas and Empalme.

Well, miracles do happen!

Clinic protocol was drastically altered by our remarkable Vet Team so the aggressive goal of 3,000 surgeries a year could still become a reality. By requiring appointments for each surgery and holding clinics over two days rather than one, we were able to complete 2,900+ surgeries in 2020. Our January two-day clinic finished last week with 208 dogs and cats getting free spay/neuter surgery.

Several creative volunteers came up with a streamlined SBPA 2021 Calendar inspired by the artwork of Ray Mahoney. Ray's representation of "An Animal's View of COVID-19" included 14 hilarious cartoons that created a "souvenir once in a lifetime" calendar. It was produced 100% online, allowing us to keep the annual calendar tradition without risking the well-being of the usual calendar team. Three hundred calendars sold in a few weeks.

The Altered Tails Book Shoppe opened by appointment, by enforcing masks and other safety standards. Sharing space with CRRIFS (Turtle rescue group) has been a super way to gain exposure for their work and encourage donations at the book store.

We are heartbroken the annual luncheon isn't possible in January but as soon as the coast is clear, we will plan a spectacular in-person event.

So where that leaves us is with a streamlined clinic process, a thriving book store. but limited revenue.

We were blessed with an anonymous donor whose $2,500 USD paid for the January clinic.

As we plan for February and the remainder of 2021, we hope you will consider making a generous donation to help us continue our vital work to help end pet overpopulation and animal homelessness - and the pain and suffering experienced by innocent animals who have no one to care for them.

Your donation is tax deductible in the US. Please help save hundreds of dogs and cats from a life of suffering. Click here to donate now.

To the Friends and Supporters of Rescate de San Carlos

We have had a wonderful response to our recent letter about the financial needs of Rescate de San Carlos. Because of the number of people who renewed their Gold Cards and those of you who made additional (and generous) contributions, we now have approximately 25% of our annual costs covered. Thank you!

However, the question of how to cover the other 75% of this year's expenses remains unanswered. We have just been notified that the major summer fishing tournaments that we count on have been canceled due to COVID-19. We have had to cancel the annual Melodrama, President’s Golf Tournament and Spring Bazaar for the same reason.

This lack of ability to fundraise means that we are counting on donations and Gold Card Membership purchases to keep the ambulance and infirmary services open. It is not legal for us to charge for our services. It costs approximately 9,000 pesos a day to pay all expenses and other than a donation from CEA (which has been reduced due to changes in the number of households in town), we are 100% dependent on the kindness of our supporters.

We realize that the pandemic has kept many of you from coming down to San Carlos this winter, but there is always next year. Without more assistance now, we remain very concerned about how we will meet your needs when you are finally able to “come back down”.

If you have already donated or purchased a Gold Card, many thanks for your kindness. If not, we hope that you can take a moment to donate or purchase a Gold Card Membership. Contributions can also be made in person at the Rescate infirmary or the RE/MAX office. US checks, payable to Rescate Services, Inc. (and tax deductible in the US) can be mailed to:
Rescate Services, Inc., c/o Debbie Storm
3661 N Campbell #715,
Tucson AZ
85719

Please feel free to contact any of the Rescate Board members if you have any questions or suggestions about our current situation.

Thank you, Glenn Lippman, President, Rescate de San Carlos AC

Fishing & Birding Reports

Fishing Report

We are getting decent weather, but not great action. Maybe they want the sunshine! The water has been cool, with not a ton of bait around. They could be getting stuffed up with crab though.

My friend jigged up one large yellowtail off San Antonio. I barely heard of a few people trying in close, but the fish just don't seem to be there. A few yellowtail were caught at the Island, mostly earlier in the day.

A lack of fishermen fishing usually results in a lack of fish caught! The bottomfishing seems to be good in areas. There are a lot of calico out there, with a few grouper caught. The fishing should pick up a bit this week, but watch for those weather windows.

Birding Report

Hola Birding Enthusiasts,

I was asked recently about the possibility of having small birding outings. The answer for this season is a "no" for two reasons: 1. I am not yet in San Carlos although we are hopeful of making it down by mid March to enjoy, at least, the spring birds. 2. I just don't want to take the risk or subject others to it during this pandemic. While the concept of being outside and keeping a safe distance sounds safe, I found last spring that it was hard to maintain even in a small group as we moved around to find the birds. It is not worth the risk. On a happy note, our bird friends do not appear to be suffering from COVID-19.

My Bird of the Week is the lovely and stately Great Egret (Garceta Grande in Spanish.) Because the Great Egret does not rely on areas with salt water for foraging, it is widely seen in freshwater, estuary and marine wetlands all across North America. Here in San Carlos we often see it along the beaches and in the estuaries such as Estero Soldado. Like the Great Blue Heron, it forages by slowly (very slowly) moving forward in shallow waters and then plunging its bill into a fish. Afterwards, it maneuvers the fish into the perfect position for swallowing whole.

Often herons and egrets forage together wherever there is an abundance of fish. But they are territorial and will chase away another bird that encroaches into its perceived territory. If two birds perceive the same territory, things can get a bit intense but, unlike humans, birds are usually smart enough to not fight so hard as to cause injuries which would result in their being vulnerable to predators.

Like other white egrets, the Great Egret was hunted almost to extinction in the early 1800's for its plumes. In the case of the Great Egret, the plumes that develop for the breeding period extend from the back. The Snowy Egret has beautiful neck plumes which it uses not only to attract a mate but to scare off birds that encroach into its territory.

The bird most often confused with the Great Egret is the Snowy but there are several ID tips that make the identification easy. I have attached two beautiful photos taken by Roger Christensen in January. The bird in flight is the Great Egret (on left). Note the black legs and yellow bill (in our photo it looks a little more orangey.) The feet are also black. In contrast, his photo of the Snowy Egret (on right) shows the black bill and yellowish legs with bright yellow feet. That plumage on the neck also tells us it is a Snowy. If the two birds are standing together, it is a no-brainer as the Great Egret is much taller. Also, because both the Great Blue Heron and the Great Egret appear similar in size (and are often seen near each other), there can be confusion. Just remember only the Great Egret is all white. If the feathers have other colors, it is the Great Blue.

I wish you all Happy Birding this week. As always, if you have any interesting sightings, questions, or comments, you may contact me at maryltannehill@yahoo.com.

Negative COVID-19 Test Required to fly into US or Canada

Effective Tuesday, January 26, the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will require all international travelers 2 years of age or older, including US citizens and legal permanent residents, arriving in or connecting through the US by air from international countries, to have a negative viral test result (NAAT or antigen) taken within 3 days prior to their flight. The result must be presented to the airline before boarding in paper or electronic copy.

Travelers also have the option of providing documentation of having had recovered from COVID-19 by showing proof of a recent positive viral test and a letter from their healthcare provider or a public health official stating that they were cleared to travel.

Travelers must also complete a travel attestation form. Read the full order here and FAQs here.

Flights between Mexico and Canada have been suspended until at least April 30.  Click here for info on the new requirements for travel to Canada. Travelers to Canada must submit COVID-related information electronically. Use ArriveCAN to comply with the mandatory requirements.

NEW: Aeropuertos Gap announced that they will install temporary COVID-19 testing labs at 12 airports in Mexico (including Hermosillo). The cost of the antigen test will be 450 pesos and PCR 1,450 pesos (only available to international passengers). They told me that it will be operational in Hermosillo on February 3. If you're going to get tested at the airport, they recommend that you arrive 4 hours before your flight.

Please satisfy yourself regarding the rules and what your airline and your destination require and accept as proof.

In San Carlos and Guaymas, where can you get tested?

  • Dr. Glenn Lippman, President of Rescate, told me that Rescate uses Laboratorio Ramos in Guaymas for Rescate employees (across from Burger King / Ley Mall in Guaymas). This lab can do PCR, rapid antigen and antibody tests. When I asked if they can do the PCR test in less than 72 hours, they replied that they can provide results in 24 - 48 hours. Antigen test results are given the same day and antibody results within a day. The costs are: PCR test, 3,500 pesos; Antigen test, 1,500 pesos and Antibody test, 1,800 pesos.
  • Laboratorio Acuña in Plaza las Palmas, San Carlos. PCR test, 3,500 pesos, results in 48 - 72 hours (can take longer); Antígen test, 1,500 pesos, results same day; Antibody test, 1,300 pesos, results same day. You don't need an appointment. 622-113-5225.
