Happy 2021 everyone! I’m Daniel Restrepo, Director of Communications for FabNewport. Thank you for the overwhelming generosity you showed us in 2020. Despite the obstacles, we reached our goals and look forward, thanks to your support, to increasing our impact in 2021.
We will increase our impact in 2021 by:
- Going deeper with our programs in Newport and Providence.
- Increasing the number of partners interested in growing a network of Place Based Education (PBE). In its simplest terms, PBE immerses students in community settings to build their skills and tackle relevant real-world challenges.
- Upgrading our organizational infrastructure to become better communicators, organizers and leaders.
Our FabNewport teens, because of the confidence they’ve gained in working with our team over the years, are engaged at the local and national level in projects involving social well being, education, transportation, and more. This is in line with our theory of change, From Making Things to Making Lives, that we highlighted in our End of Year Magazine.
Our theory of change is grounded in the giants who have come before us, such as John Dewey, Maria Montessori, Paulo Freire, Martin Luther King Jr, Abraham Maslow, Fred Rogers and Seymour Papert. These scholars, thinkers, and doers have researched, explained, and proven that hands-on learning, grounded in community-based problem-solving, transforms lives. We walk in their footsteps and their legacies inspire and guide us daily. While our core student programs will remain focused on coding, design, prototyping and small-scale manufacturing, it makes sense to expand our relationships with partners interested in creating the conditions where students can grow their skills and interests through long-term, year-round relationships in community settings.
Today I’m grateful for this supportive community and the new challenges and opportunities 2021 presents.
As we start this year, we want to share a few resources below produced by our community:
- Update from the Entrepreneurship Team
- Fab 2020 Magazine
- Episode 4 - Newport Black Voices by Americorps Director Ellen Pinnock
Lastly, we are grateful for all our friends and supporters who continue to fuel our work. Without you, our mission of inspiring the maker in all of us wouldn't be possible. Thank you!
