Winter Ratings Review open for consultation

Dear <<First Name>>

Every 6 months we review all the available information that feeds into our seafood sustainability ratings. We have spent a considerable amount of time reviewing our ratings, checking the latest available published information relevant, discussing with fishermen and fishing industry reps as well as academics and Cornwall IFCA.

Now that we have crunched the numbers we welcome the public to take part in the consultation which is run by our partners at the Marine Conservation Society. To take part please see the links below;

Headline proposed rating changes Cornwall.

Decreased

Native oyster- Sail and oar – Rating going from 2 to 3 – due to evidence that stocks are declining (CIFCA data) from Landing per unit effort data.
Small eyed ray – from 4 to 5 – Ices report – decline in biomass (stock) and Fishing effort higher than MSY – data poor- little management

Improving but no change in overall rating;

Anchovies – Peltic survey (CEFAS) shows increased stock size 2019
Cornish Sardine – Peltic study shows double size of stock in 2019
Whiting – fishing pressure decreasing (ICES) now below MSY so stock score has improved.

To comment, please download the consultation spreadsheet, complete the indicated feedback column for ratings of interest, and return your completed sheets to ratings@mcsuk.org along with any supporting information. Should you have any trouble accessing the above link, the spreadsheet is also available here, along with explanations of our ratings methodologies: https://www.mcsuk.org/responsible-seafood/about-our-ratings. As usual, this update covers a portion of our ratings but not all of them.

If you don't see a particular rating in the consultation, please check http://goodfishguide.org/ for the latest version, or contact us to see if it needs to be added to the Good Fish Guide.

There are a couple of things we would like to draw your attention to:

  • We have included a call for information for ratings that we intend to update over the summer. If you have information about these seafood sources, or the relevance of them to your businesses, we'd be very grateful for your input.
  • As always, Cornwall-Specific ratings (rated by the Cornwall Wildlife Trust, for the Cornwall Good Seafood Guide, using MCS Good Fish Guide methodology), are listed on a separate tab.
  • As is our standard practice, we have listed some ratings for deletion that we do not believe to be relevant to the UK market and / or UK fisheries and aquaculture production. We would be very keen to receive feedback on these.

Please feel free to forward this email to anyone you think might be interested in contributing to this consultation.

Please note the deadline for taking part in the consultation is 5pm Friday the 12th February.

Thankyou
