February may be the shortest month of the year, but it's full of holidays and celebrations. We begin the month with the anticipation of Ground Hog's Day. Whether we'll have an extended winter (please don't see your shadow!), then our thoughts turn to romance and admiration as we stock up on flowers and chocolates for our loved ones. Finally, we begin to plan our overdue winter break over President's Day weekend. The month also observes Black History, paying tribute to the generations who struggled with adversity to achieve full citizenship in American Society.

A few of us recently participated in a virtual book club discussing "My Own Words" by Ruth Bader Ginsberg. As we reflected on her life's work and the direct impact on our lives as women, we were left feeling a little guilty at the complacency we have for those assumed rights. When we don't reflect on the struggles of those that paved our way, we lose sight of the work that still needs to be done. Since Black History is American History, we need to celebrate all of the individuals who worked to build and move this country and continue working to create a more inclusive society. We want to encourage you to check out our list below and participate in some of the special Black History events around Metro Detroit this month. Because 'The more you know about the past, the better prepared you are for the future. '(Theodore Roosevelt)

Palmer Woods is a historic residential district located in the northwest-central section of Detroit-west of Woodward and north of Seven Mile Road. Established in 1916 by real-estate developer Charles W. Burton, the 188-acre neighborhood is characterized by its elm-lined and gently curving streets, creating a parklike atmosphere, and large brick and stone Tudor-style homes situated on large unusually shaped lots. At the southern edge of the district is the Dorothy H. Turkel House, the only house in Detroit designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.

Located in the neighborhood is Palmer Park, a 296-acre public park that includes a historic log cabin, a public golf course, tennis courts, hiking and biking trails, and a large pond known as Lake Frances. The landmark, 36-hole Detroit Golf Course is also nearby. Several public and private schools in the area include the prestigious University of Detroit Jesuit High School and Academy.

The population of Palmer Woods is approximately 1,700, and the homeownership rate is 98%. From December 2019 through December 2020, 13 (+86%) properties sold, and the average sales price was $495,000 (+10%)
