Environmental Futures Mellon Sawyer Seminar Spring speaker series

Climate change affects specific peoples, communities, wildlife species, and ecosystems in varying and inequitable ways. This speaker series circles the theme of Deep Horizons: Making Visible an Unseen Spectrum of Ecological Casualties & Prospects, traversing multiple perspectives to investigate intersectional questions concerning the changing planet. 2021 CU Social Justice Summit

Revolutionizing Systems for Equity: If Not Now, When?
Friday, February 5, 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
The Social Justice Summit is designed to recognize effective strategies and initiatives, target areas of improvement, and provide best practices to work toward CU System campus cultural and climate transformation. Staff, faculty, students and community members are invited to take part in a day of virtual workshops, presentations and discussions. Lisa Schwartz and Jeanne McDonald from the Office for Outreach and Engagement will be presenting, “Creating a Compassionate, Brave Space for Antiracism Dialogue” during the 2:00 pm session. Climate Literacy and Energy Awareness Network (CLEAN) webinar series

CLEAN is putting on their regular professional development webinar series for primary and secondary school teachers again this spring. The webinars help teachers learn how to use the CLEAN collection to teach about climate and energy. Two new webinars this year highlight elementary climate teaching and teaching about climate consequences and solutions. Please pass the link to learn more and register to teachers in your networks. Next webinars are:
  • Thursday, February 11, 4:30-5:30 p.m. - Strategies for integrating climate science into the elementary classroom, presented by Alicia Christensen, Tiffany Boyd, and Rachel Han. (New webinar this semester!)
  • Tuesday, February 16, 4:00-5:00 p.m. - Teaching about climate and energy with CLEAN, presented by Karin Kirk.
  • Wednesday, February 24, 4:30-5:30 p.m. - It's us: Humans as agents of change within Earth's climate system, presented by Karin Kirk.

Environmental Engineering Social Justice Series

The Environmental Engineering Undergraduates invite you to the spring semester continuation of their Environmental Justice Speaker Series. The series is hosted by the Society of Environmental Engineers in collaboration with the Environmental Engineering Program, BOLD Center, Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, and Society of Asian Scientists and Engineers. Please save the dates and plan to join the seminars on Zoom:
  • Monday, February 15, 5:30-6:30 p.m. - Environmental justice impacts of energy development by Stephanie Malin, Colorado State University.
  • Monday, March 22, 3:00-4:00 p.m. - Environmental justice and human health, by Joan Casey, Columbia University.

Outreach and Engagement funding

Apply by February 5
CU Boulder faculty, staff and students, are you doing research, teaching or creative work that connects with communities across the state and beyond? The CU Boulder Outreach Awards Committee and the Office for Outreach and Engagement are accepting proposals through Feb. 5, 2021 to support this type of scholarship. Download information or register for an info session on the OOE website. The annual CU Boulder Outreach Awards (selected by an interdisciplinary campus committee) as well as the office's Community Impact and Micro Grant programs fund project-related expenses such as materials, supplies, equipment and more. Each funding type has its own selection criteria, application requirements and allowable expenses.
 

Inside the Greenhouse Comedy & Climate Change short video competition

Apply by April 1
Humor is an underused tool in climate change communication; yet comedy has the power to connect people, information, ideas, and new ways of thinking/acting. In this 6th annual competition, Inside the Greenhouse seeks to harness the powers of climate comedy through compelling, resonant and meaningful videos, up to two minutes in length, to meet people where they are and open them up to new and creative engagement. Successful entries will have found the funny while relating to climate change issues. Each entry will be reviewed by a committee composed of students, staff and faculty at CU Boulder. See the Inside the Greenhouse website for info on submitting your own two-minute-or-less creation, filmed within the last year. Contest open to all CU Boulder students and any resident of Planet Earth who is not also CU Boulder faculty or staff.
  • 1st place: $400 prize
  • 2nd place: $250
  • 3rd place: $100

Future Earth and the United Nations FCCC launch 2020 10 New Climate Insights

Unaccounted emissions from permafrost, threats to the land sink, impacts on mental health and freshwater, COVID-19 outcomes, and rights-based litigation to address climate change. These are some of the most recent findings in climate change science summarized in Future Earth's 10 New Insights in Climate Science 2020. This interdisciplinary report was launched in an online event featuring Patricia Espinosa, the Executive Secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), held on 27 January. It is based on a paper simultaneously released in the journal Global Sustainability.
