13th Annual Institute for Global Health/GHI Event
The 13th Annual Institute for Global Health/GHI Event took place on Tuesday, November 10th. Presented virtually, the event supports Northwestern's commitment to improving health worldwide. We heard from fellow global health leaders, faculty, and students who shared our recent achievements, global projects, and how the Institute is helping in the fight against COVID-19.

During the event, it was announced that The John R. Flanagan Charitable Foundation has made a five-year, $3 million commitment to establish the Dr. Robert L. Murphy Professorship in Emerging Infectious Disease. It’s the largest gift made to the institute since its establishment in the spring of 2019.  At the end of the event, Drs. Robert Murphy and Robert Havey answered pandemic related questions submitted by attendees. You can watch a recording of the event here, and can read a story re-capping the event here.
The Role of Race, Religion, and Partisanship in Misinformation about COVID-19
The Institute for Global Health “First Friday” seminar series is held on the first Friday of each month, September through July, and features the research and ideas of outstanding global health leaders at Feinberg, the larger Northwestern community, and beyond.

On January 8th, our speaker was Professor James Druckman, PhD, Payson S. Wild Professor of Political Science and Associate Director of the Institute for Policy Research at Northwestern. Jamie's research focuses on political preference formation and communication, and his recent work recent work examines how citizens make political, economic, and social decisions in various contexts (e.g., settings with multiple competing messages, online information, deliberation). His timely presentation allowed for a discussion on the growing concerns about misinformation among the public, particularly investigating misinformation about COVID-19 and the role of racial/ethnic, religious, and partisan groups, and the severe consequences of misinformation spread.

Global Health Day 2020

The Institute for Global Health's second annual Global Health Day event, titled Global Health in the Pandemic Era, was held on Friday, December 4th, and was an incredible success!

The virtual gathering featured seven poster breakout room sessions, totaling 42 poster presentations, highlighting the work and research of undergraduate, graduate, medical, and PhD students, 20 of which represent the work of esteemed faculty, staff, and trainees. We were honored to be joined by Dr. Lisa Hirschhorn, MD, MPH for a setting-the-stage lecture titled Implementation Research During COVID-19: How Can it Contribute to Achieving Equity in COVID-19 Vaccine Coverage?, which focused on the role of implementation research in achieving equity in the COVID-19 vaccine coverage. Our keynote presentation by Dr. Victor Dzau, MD, President of the National Academy of Medicine, titled Global Solidarity and Equitable Access to Vaccine for the Novel Coronavirus, reviewed the urgent call to actions to accelerate the development, production, and equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines, diagnostics, and therapeutics, and how lessons learned now may inform future development efforts.

IGH was proud to award seven student, faculty, and community members from all disciplines that presented posters on projects relevant to global health. To view the presentation recordings and all 2020 poster submissions and winners, visit us online here. You can also read more about the event's successes here.

The Institute for Global Health would like to congratulate

Northwestern University Faculty Participate in Cardiological Society of India 2020 Conference

Several Northwestern Medicine faculty members from the Division of Cardiology participated in the Cardiological Society of India 2020 virtual conference. The Director of the Center for Global Cardiovascular Health, Mark D. Huffman MD, MPH, has had a long-standing collaboration with the Cardiological Society of India and their current President, Padinhare P. Mohanan MD, DM. Together, they led a team of investigators to conduct the largest randomized trial in cardiovascular medicine in India to date, The Acute Coronary Syndrome Quality Improvement in Kerala (ACS QUIK) study. The Institute of Global Health’s current post-graduate fellow in global health and third-year fellow in the Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship Program, Anubha Agarwal MD MSc, shared her perspective at the virtual conference on leading a study on improving heart failure care in South India.
COVID-19 Trends and Modeling Website Launched

Illinois COVID Modeling is a joint effort between Northwestern University (NU), the University of Chicago (UC), the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), and Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) who have been modeling COVID-19 in Illinois since March 2020. In partnership with the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH), they use simulation models to predict trends in hospital usage and deaths at the COVID-19 Region level.

COVID-19 modeling at Northwestern is led by the Malaria and COVID-19 Modeling Team, which is led by Jaline Gerardin, PhD, an infectious disease modeling group with expertise in using models to inform policy. In addition to their COVID-19 work, they work with malaria-endemic countries to develop data-driven national strategic plans to reduce malaria morbidity and mortality.

Dr. Gerardin and Dr. Sarah Cobey will be presenting on their work with the State of Illinois on forecasting COVID-19 epidemic trends, predicting upcoming hospital capacity needs, and standing up a sentinel surveillance system as our "First Friday" speakers on Friday, March 5th at 12 p.m. CST. You can register to attend here.
