TCS Times

Nau mai, haere mai ngā whānau o te kura o Tahatai.  A very warm welcome to all our TCS students and their families.

A very warm welcome to the Tahatai 2021 school year. It has been a wonderful start with the children settling back into routines, their learning, and reconnecting with friends.

Thank you to all those families who were able to attend the 'Whānau Hui - Meet the Teacher' held on Tuesday 2nd February.  We hope you found this hui as valuable as we did. Being able to connect before Term 1 had officially started made such a positive impact in transitioning the students back to school. It is a Tahatai way to work in partnership to ensure every child's context is understood and that learning is designed to support and grow every learner. Thank you.

The Term 1 Pōwhiri, held on Wednesday 3rd February, was a special way to acknowledge and welcome new staff, students and their families. A special thank you to Ngākohu for attending as a speaker on behalf of Ngā Pōtiki (Tangata Whenua), Rowan Barton for her stunning karanga (welcome call), and to Mike Standing for speaking on behalf of our guests (Manuhiri). We hope our new families and students are settling well into life at Tahatai and now feel a special part of our school community.

A very warm welcome to our new staff - Bex McKenzie (Room19), Holly Read (Room 23), and Kelli Lyle (Reading Recovery). Also a special welcome back to Briarley Inglis (Room 22) who has returned from maternity leave and Whaea Louise who has returned to take Kapa Haka every Wednesday.
A huge thank you to all the builders for working extra hours over the school holidays so that Rooms 31-34 were ready for the students for the start of the school year. This massive push meant we were able to open these classrooms a month earlier than scheduled. As a school, we are so excited and are feeling grateful to have such modern and functional spaces for our children to learn. The four classrooms also come with two large breakout spaces, comprehensive decking and a grandstand! Thank you to the Tahatai Board of Trustees for supporting the additional works beyond what the Ministry of Education were funding. On top of this, we also have a brand new basketball court located on the far side of the sports fields. This is such a cool resource for our school and community. Fencing will be installed around the court later this term.

Thank you for your support phasing out the old uniform. We are so excited to now see the whole school wearing the new uniform and man do they look cool! Having the same uniform brings us together as a school and shows a true sense of pride in our community. Another exciting new development happening this Friday is the issuing of new Whare shirts. With new sponsors, we will need to collect the old ones in to swap. This respects the sponsorship arrangement with the new businesses who have covered the cost of the new shirts. I know the children will be very excited to swap their Whare shirt this Friday for a brand new one.
Through sponsorship, we are trying to raise money to fund projects that the Ministry of Education doesn't allow for. One such project is to get a school van to support educational trips for our students. If you are interested in sponsoring the school and would love to have your very own 'School Business Partners' sign at the front of the school, then please get in contact with us. The feedback we are having from the signs out front is incredibly positive and supporting businesses is something Tahatai wants to promote.
A friendly reminder that we expect all our parents and whānau to model safe practices during pick up and drop off times. This includes not parking on yellow lines, over our neighbours driveways, ensuring you use the school pedestrian crossings, and being patient when traffic is heavy. The Kiss'n Go drop-off area is working well but this zone is not for drivers requiring to exit their vehicle. A staff member will be present to help with scooters, bikes, and bags if needed. We want this drop off zone to be a fast and efficient way to drop your children off.

Wanted: Old Uniform and Whare Shirts
We are collecting any items of the old Tahatai uniform and Whare shirts to donate to people in need in Fiji and Nepal.  As mentioned above, the old Whare shirts will be collected at school tomorrow.  Both the old uniform and Whare shirts will be collected by the House of Travel in two weeks' time.  Please place any items of the old uniform you wish to donate in the labelled boxes outside the school office.

TECT Community Awards - Please Vote!
PiPS, the organisation behind our lovely Tahatai garden club, has been selected as a finalist in the category ’Sustainable Future’ in the TECT Community Awards which Whaea Clare and her team are very honoured about. This nomination has come about because of the hard work and amazing contribution the tamariki, teachers and volunteers have put into the club.

TECT is holding a people's choice award and PiPS would like you to take the time to vote for them.  The voting takes less than 20-30 seconds to complete.

Please click on the link below to vote.  Voting closes on Friday, 5th March.

Have a beautiful day everyone.

Ngā mihi nui, the PiPs team.

Policy Review - Term 1

Once a term, the SchoolDocs team gathers and collates feedback on policy content, using it to revise and update where appropriate. This means that our school benefits from the collective review of the policy, as other schools may have:

• experiences dealing with issues that our school hasn’t faced yet

• board personnel with particular skills and insights

• different cultures and contexts that provide a more well-rounded view of the policy/procedure.

As parents/caregivers if you wish to be involved in this review:

  1. Visit the website https://tahatai.schooldocs.co.nz/1893.htm

  2. Enter the username (tahatai) and password (coast).
  3. Follow the link to the relevant policy as listed.
  4. Read the policy.
  5. Click the Policy Review button at the top right-hand corner of the page.
  6. Select the reviewer type "Parent".
  7. Enter your name (optional).
  8. Submit your ratings and comments.
  9. If you don't have internet access, the school office staff can provide you with printed copies of the policy and a review form.

This term parents/caregivers are invited to review:

Community Information Session - TCC
Community Information Session: New council rubbish, recycling and food scraps collection service

Welcome back to the New Year.

Shortly all residents of Tauranga City will begin receiving their new kerbside rubbish and recycling bins and we have an opportunity for staff and parents to attend information sessions regarding the new service. We would like to promote these sessions through your school newsletter or social media to engage with families who reside in the area.

The community session in your schools area is on Tuesday 2nd March 2021 3-6pm and the content we would like to share in the newsletter is; ‘New council rubbish, recycling and food scraps collection service begins on 1 July 2021. Do you have questions about the new kerbside service? Come along to the Tauranga City Councils community info session at Papamoa Community Centre, 15 Gravatt Road.’
Urgent message
re:New Entrant Enrolments

Do you have a child turning 5 this year?

We urgently need an indication of how many 5 year olds we will be expecting during 2021. If you have a child due to start school, please come and see us to complete the enrolment paperwork.

This helps us to plan a smooth transition into school for your child; helps us to plan staffing for the New Entrant classes; and ensures that you are invited to the relevant parent information meetings. Thank you.
Reminder: Use of Bike Bay
To help with the flow of the children through the bike bay, we would appreciate if parents/caregivers and other whānau members do not cut through or access the area.  We would like to keep this area clear for children to enter easily in the morning and exit in the afternoon.  This is simply a congestion issue.
Donated Children's Bikes
We have had ten children's bikes gifted to us by the Good Neighbour Trust.  Three of the bikes have already been donated.  If you, or someone you know are in need of a child's bike, please contact Darren by email: darrens@tahatai.school.nz.  All bikes come with a new helmet.  The bikes can be viewed in the school hall.  Please see the photos below of the remaining bikes.
