African heritage specialty crops knowledge shared

Dr. Nadine Burton-Stubbs, an alternative crop specialist with UMES Extension’s Small Farm Program, was a featured speaker on January 31 during the second day of the virtual 2021 Urban Farmer Winter meeting.  Her topic was “African heritage specialty crop research.”

Burton highlighted alternative crops such as callaloo (pictured above), sorrel and scotch bonnet peppers as potential additions to the current cropping system. These crops, she said, are consumed across ethnic groups and have the ability to create niche markets. They are high-valued crops with high yield and value-added potential, which can increase farm income.

UMES researcher earns national award for work aimed at controlling ammonia emissions in poultry houses.
Congratulations to Dr. Fawzy Hashem, a research associate professor in UMES' Department of Agriculture, Food and Resource Sciences, and his colleagues at the USDA, Agricultural Research, Southeast Area Coastal Plains Soil, Water and Plant Research Center Service for receiving the 2021 Excellence in Technology Transfer National Award from the Federal Laboratory Consortium for Technology Transfer for their work "Recovery of Ammonia from Waste Using Gas-permeable Membranes." They will accept the award at a virtual ceremony on April 7 as part of the organization's national meeting.

UMES Extension Nutrition and Health program assistant hailed as a champion of the community

Making an impact in the community through his professional and personal life is what drives McCoy Curtis Jr., especially in these challenging times, and it has not gone unnoticed.

Curtis was honored last month on Martin Luther King Jr. Day during a “live” virtual celebration of the Tri-County MLK Coalition’s 36th annual banquet honoring their namesake.  The UMES Extension Nutrition and Health Program educator was the Somerset County recipient of an achievement award presented to standouts in the area for their humanitarian services to the community.

Curtis was also a recent honoree of the Town of Princess Anne Commissioners for his contributions toward community development activities.

Dear SANS Stakeholders,

Last year this time, many of us were just beginning to get a sense of how dire predictions about the global pandemic would affect us where we live . . . our homes, our businesses, our children, our elderly, our schools and institutions of higher learning, etc. I am convinced that not many of us understood how much it would cost us personally and that it would be almost a year before there was even a glimmer of hope that the end is coming.

Today, given recent medical advances, I am thankful for the hope I have concerning the pandemic. I believe the end is in sight. So let’s take a moment to pause despite the distractions we are facing. I believe it is important because there are only a few days left in February. In addition to this month marking our place in time concerning the pandemic, it also marks the celebration of African American history.

Furthermore, I am reminded that in only a few more days we will be looking at the anniversary of when we started online learning and remote work. There was a bit of a learning curve, to say the least. What’s important, however, is that we have been successful in many ways despite the challenges. How fitting, in that individual successes despite immeasurable challenges is the hallmark of the observance of Black History Month.

So while I am encouraging you to take time to read the stories included in this newsletter, I’m also encouraging you to draw encouragement from three great minds, who happen to be African American:

“Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has overcome while trying to succeed.” – Booker T. Washington
“If you’re always trying to be normal, you’ll never know how amazing you can be.” –Maya Angelou
“Education is the key to unlock the golden door of freedom.” George Washington Carver

Lastly, to the faculty, staff and students of SANS and to all of you . . . never mind the obstacles, just continue to succeed. Be amazing, hold fast to your dreams and remember to support one another when there is suffering and let’s remain focused on our powerful mission.

Moses T. Kairo
SANS Professor and Dean

Participants can earn 4-H Junior Master Gardener Level One Certification by completing the educational series.  Topics cover soil health, water quality, ecology, environmental horticulture, insects, diseases and plant growth. Youth will also explore career options and put their new knowledge to use on a community service project as a group.

Town shows appreciation for UMES WCC team

A group of UMES faculty members and Extension educators were recognized February 1 for their “dedication and diligence in community service to the Town of Princess Anne.”

“The Well Connected Communities program has been instrumental to the community in teaching them proper nutrition and how to grow their own foods through the community garden,” said Garland Hayward, vice president of the Princess Anne Town Commissioners.  He said the recognition came on the heels of WCC’s implementation of a contactless food drive for some 600 Somerset countians.

Farm risk management classes continue through spring

Local farmers can still take advantage of University of Maryland Eastern Shore Extension’s MyFaRM initiative, a free program consisting of a series of classes covering the aspects of farm risk management.

The spring line-up starts on March 8 at the Henson Center with the first of two production risk classes and continues on April 7 on the UMES Education and Demonstration Farm, both are from 9 a.m. to noon.  Marketing risk is the final series meeting on May 11 from 3-6 in the Henson Center and in June on a date to be determined to coincide with UMES Extension's Small Farm Marketing Bus Tour.
