Hello everyone

A flying start to the year is what I hope you are all having?  Have you started back with your meetings and schedules?  Read the newsletters from your other Friends and find out what they are up to and see what interesting things are going in in their gardens.

I spent the day at a covid planning protocol workshop for large agricultural shows as I help out our local Show Society.  My head is still spinning from all the information however, as the man in charge asks:  How do you eat an elephant.  One bite at a time.  Best advice for us all I think this year when we might be overwhelmed with covid and life.

The Handbury Awards:  You might feel that nothing much was achieved last year with the 2020 shut down, but ask who kept you all going?  Was there someone in your group that was helpful when you needed to keep chins up? There is always planning going on behind the scenes too, does anyone fit that bill?  There is a link on here, one on the web page and in an email sent last week.  I am pretty keen on getting some entries.

I am expecting a huge turnout of members at the AGM this year too so we can all get together at the Waite Arboretum in Adelaide. Save the date April 12th 2021 to attend and meet the committee. Let me know if you are able to attend or not.

Eurobadalla conference 2022 contributors are still needed to come forward so there's another little something to add to your list of things to do.

This time in the newsletter we have:

  • Nomination information for the 2021 Handbury Award
  • Current Grant Ops
  • Grant ops listed by states
  • EOI
  • The Chef's Hat
  • Friends of Hamilton
  • Friends of Ivanhoe
  • Cruden Farm
  • Vic State Govt grants program
  • BGCI
  • Botanic Gardens of South Australia
  • Justice Connect
If there is anything you feel you might like to read about in these newsletters please send me an email or call.

Council has given approval for the Friends to proceed with the planning of the parterre Rose Garden as per the Master Plan. To this end, we have engaged Lisa Ellis, Landscape Architect to draw up a plan which we can then use to apply for funding to complete the project.
As a result of DWELP funding, The Council have appointed Outerspace Landscape Architects to create the plan for the Children’s Nature Play Space and Community Precinct. Further community
consultation is expected in the New Year.

Reforestation for Biodiversity, Carbon Capture and Livelihoods

Tree planting dominates political and popular agendas, often portrayed as an easy answer to the climate crisis and effective mitigation for corporate carbon emissions. But, it is not a simple solution and planting the wrong trees in the wrong place can cause considerably more damage than benefits, failing to benefit either people or nature.

Nature is a healer, and there's no better place to nurture your health and wellbeing than your local botanic garden.
At Mount Lofty Botanic Garden, shaded pathways through the gullies (Fern Gully is pictured above) are a great place to escape the busyness of the day.
At Adelaide Botanic Garden, the recently re-opened Simpson Shadehouse is a calming space, where you can also gain inspiration to create your own botanical haven.
