Nau mai, haere mai

Over the past three months the Regional Programme team have been in your community running Healthy Lifestyle group programmes, walking local tracks and supporting clients in home with healthy cooking education and walking alongside clients on their healthy lifestyle journey.

How does Green Prescription support children and whānau?

When a child is referred to the Green Prescription service our Programme Coordinator will make contact with the family within a few days to discuss the service and ensure it aligns with the family’s expectations.

Following this, a Programme Advisor will arrange a time to meet with the family, this may be in their home, at a local park, café or community centre. The Programme Advisor and whānau will get to know one another, together they will set out goals, share resources and implement a wellbeing plan.

Programme Advisors run weekly activity and healthy kai sessions for whānau after school in term time. Current sessions are based in Lower Hutt, Masterton and Porirua. At these fun, free sessions whānau are linked in with local activity providers, introduced to local walks and parks, develop fundamental movement skills with sporting providers and partake in cooking and healthy kai sessions. Alongside this, whānau and Programme Advisors continue to meet one to one for up to 12 months.

Referrals year to date

This quarter, our support has been offered to 646 clients across the region, 85 of which are under the age of 18. Our focus for the next six-months is to increase the percentage of Māori and Pasifika referrals (currently tracking at 48%). Work is underway to engage with Māori, Pasifika and community organisations.

  • Capital and Coast region referred 56% Māori and Pasifika
  • Hutt Valley referred 34% Māori and Pasifika
  • Wairarapa referred 9% Māori and Pasifika
