I trust all Pullenvale Ward residents had a wonderful Christmas / New Year break and that you’re refreshed and ready to take on the challenges that await us in 2021. This is my first Pullenvale Post for the year. Through these regular e-newsletters, I aim to keep local residents updated on Council initiatives in the Ward and news of interest. As always, we welcome your feedback either via reply to this email or by contacting the Ward office directly on 07 3407 0220 during business hours or Pullenvale.ward@bcc.qld.gov.au

WELCOME TO OUR NEW CITIZENS

It is one of my biggest honours as Pullenvale Ward Councillor to officiate at a citizenship ceremony and welcome new Australian citizens.

On Australia Day, I presided over a ceremony at Kenmore that saw 50 western suburbs residents from 23 different countries swear their oath of allegiance to Australia.

Brisbane has a rich multicultural fabric. We have the highest proportion of residents born overseas in Australia - around 32% - coming from over 200 countries.

I encouraged our new citizens to participate fully in our inclusive society, and to realise and achieve their goals and dreams regardless of race, background, gender, religion, language or birth place.

We all benefit from a strong and harmonious community, one that shares their past but also holds common hopes and goals for the future.

Many thanks to the Rotary Club of Kenmore for organising yet again another successful local citizenship ceremony.

MOGGILL BIRTHING TREE SAVED

A century old tree at Moggill has been saved from removal after concerned residents and Council worked with the developer to ensure the tree was preserved as part of a proposed development.

The tree is of cultural significance and was at risk of removal as part of the developer’s proposed plan to subdivide a block at 82 Weekes Road into six housing blocks.

I’m pleased the tree was saved and my thanks go out to all involved, particularly the developer who agreed to amend his Development Application to accommodate it in the revised plan. It shows that community spirit and co-operation is alive and well.

LORD MAYOR’S COVID-19 GRANTS

Almost $90,000 has been provided through the Lord Mayor’s COVID-19 Programme to assist 11 community, cultural and sport and recreation clubs in the Pullenvale Ward to help them rebuild and re-commence services to residents after the coronavirus pandemic. Read more here

LOCAL AUSTRALIA DAY AWARD WINNER

Congratulations to The Hut Environmental and Community Association (THECA) on winning a Lord Mayor’s Australia Day Award.

It was a pleasure to have nominated THECA for the great work they do with bushcare and other conservation activities in our local community, and it was satisfying being present at the function at City Hall to witness the presentation.

Greg Siepen, on behalf of THECA received the 2020 “Spirit of Brisbane” award from Lord Mayor, Adrian Schrinner.

BASKETBALL COURT – KENMORE

The new half basketball / netball court at the Council Park, Akuna St, Kenmore opened as promised before Christmas.

A basketball / netball hoop option was installed instead of two basketball hoops in response to feedback from the community consultation undertaken earlier last year.

AVENUE OF SHADE – CHAPEL HILL STATE SCHOOL

One of my commitments in this year’s Suburban Enhancement Programme was to build an Avenue of Shade at the Chapel Hill State School.

Almost $30,000 was allocated to build a new footpath and provide trees for shade outside the school in Ironbark Road, near the bus zone.

PIONEER CRESCENT PARK UPGRADE

Council will soon be undertaking a major redevelopment of the popular Pioneer Crescent Park, Bellbowrie.

Among the new features will be a “flying fox” similar to the one shown here, and is as a result of feedback from residents during local consultation undertaken late last year.

The redevelopment will see the removal of the existing playground equipment with the exception of one swing, which will be relocated under the shade structure. We will also replace a missing section of pathway to make one smooth, continuous bike/scooter track around the entire playground; create two terraced levels using sandstone blocks; and install a multi-platform climbing unit with multiple slides, bridges, and climbing nets.

It is planned to install new swings next financial year when additional funds become available.

DOG OFF LEASH PARK LIGHTING – BELLBOWRIE

Council will be improving lighting at the Dog Off-Leash Area at Booker Place Park Bellbowrie this month.

The aim of this project is to increase the amount of time owners have to exercise and socialise their dogs. The new lights will provide coverage across all of the DOLA and will automatically switch off at 9pm.

A temporary closure of the DOLA is required during the project to facilitate the works. Every effort is being made to minimise disruption to the local community and Council thanks residents for their patience and understanding while the work is being undertaken.

CONGESTION BUSTING PROJECT UPDATE

I mentioned in a previous newsletter that Council was looking to upgrade the Brookfield Road and Rafting Ground Road intersection under its “congestion busting” programme.

Public consultation was undertaken and following concerns raised by a number of residents, particularly in relation to access to the Church as a result of the proposed changes, I asked Council to put this project on hold.

I’m not convinced this is the most pressing traffic congestion location in the Ward and I will work with Council officers to determine where best the funding set aside for this project can be redirected.

PRIORS POCKET ROAD FEEDBACK

Thanks to the many local residents who provided feedback as part of consultation undertaken regarding Priors Pocket Road, Moggill.

Council’s draft concept plan was well received with a number of suggestions provided having merit. These suggestions will now be considered by Council in determining how the final plan for the land at the end of the road will look.

I’ll keep you updated on developments with this exciting proposal.

FREE PLUG FOR A GOOD CAUSE

Late last year, I spoke to Rachel from Sorella and Co. after they had applied to Council to operate an Italian food van at various locations throughout the Pullenvale Ward.

I agreed that something like this was long overdue and was pleased when it was approved. If social media is a barometer, local residents have embraced the idea and are supporting Sorella. It might also have something to do with the high quality food at great prices.
