Episcopal Summer Camp Updates

The Council of Trustees and the Bishop for the Episcopal Diocese of Kansas are currently discerning whether or not we will be able to offer Episcopal Summer Camp at Camp Wood YMCA this summer.

If we DO decide to offer camp, we will follow the recommendations from Camp Wood YMCA and the American Camp Association (their accrediting body) to provide as safe an environment as possible, but we cannot eliminate 100% of the risk. Check out Camp Wood YMCA's web site campwood.org/covid-19 for more details on their plans, including a “policies and procedures” document at the very bottom that details specifically all the cleaning and social distancing protocols.

We anticipate a decision about camp will be made at the February 24 meeting of the Council of Trustees. We will notify everyone via e-mail. Registration will begin no later than March 1. Camp will be June 6-12, 2021, and may need to have a higher fee than normal since we will be limited to fewer campers than normal.
Candlemas: The Presentation of Our Lord, February 2

Canterbury House at K-State celebrating candlemas as part of their weekly program on Monday, February 1.

THE COLLECT FOR THE PRESENTATION
Almighty and everliving God, we humbly pray that,
as your only-begotten Son was this day presented in the temple,
so we may be presented to you with pure and clean hearts by Jesus Christ our Lord;
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen

Candlemas is actually a very old feast, celebrated by both the churches of the East and the West. It began in the 4th century, in a church in Jerusalem.

The day falls forty days after Christmas, and it is also the Feast of the Purification and the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple. At the time when Jesus was presented, a man named Simeon was present. He had asked the Holy Spirit to live until he saw the Savior. Hence the Song of Simeon, which we say as part of Compline, expresses his joy at seeing Christ:
Lord, you now have set your servant free
to go in peace as you have promised;
For these eyes of mine have seen the Savior,
whom you have prepared for all the world to see:
A light to enlighten the nations,
and the glory of your people Israel.
If we light our candles this Candlemas and every day as part of devotion, we can pray that they will remind us of God’s love for each of us.

Be the Wall

Any new swimmer knows how important the side wall of the deep end is to their learning. It’s where they kick off into those deeper waters. It’s where they swim back to as quickly as they can. They go out a few feet at first and come back, trying a farther distance each time. This wall is important to all swimmers, beginner, intermediate and advanced. Psychologist Lisa Damour uses this metaphor when talking about parenting, she focuses on daughters but I think it applies to all children.

“Your [child] needs a wall to swim to, and they need you to be a wall that can withstand their comings and goings.” -Untangled: Guiding Teenage Girls Through the Seven Transitions of Adulthood

There are two parts of being the wall for our young person. The first is being there when they need to swim back out of the deep waters of life. The wall does not move. Young people are on their own timeline and will be ready to discuss the tough stuff when they are ready. As a parent we are prepared to be present whenever that happens. We notice the signs that our child is ready to talk and we listen. Either right in that moment or we set up a time in the near future to be with them.

The second part is that wall is strong and holds up to all their comings and goings. There may be a series of quick, rude, comings and goings. There may be a lot of goings but not a lot of comings. We may be hurt by offering space and not being taken up on it. There may be scuffs, even dents in the wall. We remain in place though. We show that through the tough times we are still there. Nothing can separate us from the love we have for our children.

I’ve been thinking about this metaphor and reciting it a bit as a mantra as my 6-year-old tries out some of her own need for space from me. Be a wall. Be a wall she can come back to. It calms me in those moments I’m ready to talk but she isn’t.
