We're kicking off Making Spaces!
Decatur Makers is thrilled to announce that we have kicked off our Making Spaces program designed to develop local leadership around maker-centered learning for youth in Georgia!
And we're even more excited to share the amazing teams of educators that have joined Cohort 1:
The Making Spaces Program is a 30-month professional learning and capacity building program for teachers. It empowers K12 educators to incorporate maker-led education, promote critical thinking and problem-solving, and build the foundation for long-term, embedded change in three core areas with an emphasis on sustainability + growth:
- pedagogy,
- community, and
- culture.
Decatur Makers is part of Cohort 4 in the national Making Spaces program led by Maker Ed with support from the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh (CMP). They have the ambitious goal to sustainably integrate making into learning environments across the country.
The pandemic delayed our launch, and we're dancing over here now that we are getting started!

Decatur Makers is offering you some treasure! We need your help to pick through and take home the overflow of materials that have been cleaned out of the makerspace. The POD outside the space is filled with all sorts of electronic goodies, and some pieces of furniture that we don't need anymore.
The Event will take place on Sunday, March 7th from 10-4:00pm.
SIgn up for a scheduled shift to pick by clicking HERE!
Please do not show up without signing up for a shift due to our Covid protocols!
If you can't come but are interested, email us at info@decaturmakers.org.

Our Outreach Manager, Chris Wilkerson, led a coding workshop with educators using a servo motor to create a walking cardboard "inchworm".
Decatur Makers is a community partner in a 2-year teacher professional development program funded by the Governor's Office of Student Achievement (GOSA) and led by our friends at the Drew Charter School.

While at home and in the makerspace, our members have been busy making some of the things that make them happy, to give as gifts, and/or that solve problems. Here are a few that they've shared... #makersgonnamake

Member (and Board Director) Jim Reed designed and made this beautiful, thoughtful and practical Valentine's Day gift for his wife. It holds yarn so their cats can't get to it while she knits!

Aubrey, one of our teen members, built this awesome electric scooter!
She designed it in CAD, built the battery system, and welded the base with a hinged top as part of her high school Sophomore Capstone project.
