‘How to enter the BSQ Competition.
Start with the Competition Show Schedule.
This applies to the Autumn Show in March.
This can be downloaded from the BSQ website, under Resources.
This shows the Rules governing entrants: like owning the plant for 6 months, plants being disease-free, clean, and with no water to drench the judges!
One can enter up to three entries in each Class.
Consult the Show Schedule to decide to which class your plant belongs.
Getting the name right:
To clarify the name of your plant, consult the BCR for hybrids
http://registry.bsi.org/index.php?
and the Taxon List for names of species:
https://bromeliad.nl/taxonList.php
Enter your details on the form, and list your plants, and bring this to the Autumn Show between 9am and midday on the Friday before the Show.
Thanks Rob and Peter.
Plant of The Month:
Stigmatodon with Bruce Dunstan

This genus was separated from Vrieseas, and there are 20 species.
They are endemic to Brazil.
They are distinguished from Vrieseas by the shape of the flower which has ‘toothed stigma lobes’, or teeth on the female parts of the flower.
They grow on the steep slopes of inselbergs (massive rocks) in Brazil.

They tolerate full sun, but grow very slowly in the nutrient-poor habitat. However, growth in a pot with water and fertiliser enables much faster growth and earlier flowering.
S. harrylutheri (below)

S. plurifolius (below) is pollinated by moths, can be grown from seed.

S. apparicianus (below)

S. euclidianus (below)

S. brassicoides this grows on a sheer rock wall, is 0.5 to 1m long.
is monocarpic, bloom opens for one night only!

These are very rare, so snap it up if you see one on sale!
Thanks Bruce .

Guest Speaker was Stan Walkley who shared his 46 years of Growing Plants.

Rosemount Gardens occupy 22 acres (9 hectares) near Maroochydore. Cheryl Basic and David Tanswell were early colleagues who offered mutual support.

In 1976, a builder by trade, Stan joined the Palm Society, and his nursery supplied 57 trailer loads of palms to Expo ‘88, making a successful start in the plant business.
Stan introduced us to his remarkable commercial nursery, where he grows large numbers of a great variety of plants.
Bromeliads are only a part of his business.
Alcantarea species and variegates are many, including P.I.T.A. a variegated sport of Al. extensa.

A pergola full of bromeliads

A beautiful Alcantarea cerosa (below).

Vriesea ‘Jane’ was created by Stan, named for his wife,
and registered in 2005. Parents unknown.

This hanging clump of Tillandsia ionantha red was impressive,
Stan's creation.

Deuterocohnia brevifolia attracted his interest years ago and he created 70 x 4inch pots of it and grew them on for sale.

Plants from Madagascar appear to be a major interest to Stan.
A dwarf Poinciana is shown laden with blooms, and without them.

He has species similar to Golden Canes (Dypsis), all from Madagascar.
He has 70 Boab trees, coming from Madagasca and Africa.
Cycads (below).

Queensland native bottle trees grow well under Stan’s care
and he used them for grafting. e.g. a Tangerine Bell tree is grafted onto a bottle tree.

Euphorbias are included in Stan’s nursery, includes Euphorbia geroldii hybrid has no spines.

Palms are grown in landscaped garden beds surrounded by vast lawns (who mows them?) These are beautifully arranged, and were admired by bus loads from the Sunny Broms Conference in 2017.
These include palms from Cuba.

He has a bamboo grove with several varieties.

He showed a variegated Monstera that sold for $4000
and Stan has a talent for landscaping to display his palms.

Thanks Stan for sharing with us your passion for such a variety of plants.
