February is Black History Month 
As a College and community, Frederick Community College believes that Black history, achievements, pride, and culture must be honored and celebrated every single day and in every month of the year. We join others in celebrating Black History Month and the ongoing movements for justice, equity, and inclusion for Black communities in Frederick, in Maryland, and globally. Please see our Campus Events & Activities section for events we have planned to honor Black History Month. 

Online Support for Students with Family Members with Alzheimer's 
Do you have a family member with Alzheimer’s Disease or another dementia? If so, are you struggling to help your family provide care or are the changes you are seeing in your loved one hard to take? You could benefit from a new online college student support group for students from schools across Maryland who have family members with Alzheimer’s or other dementia and are looking for a safe space to share stories and get information, resources, and support. Please contact Megeen White at the Alzheimer’s Association at mewhite@alz.org or ​240-549-5086 for more information and to register. Participation is free. You can also help us get started by completing the survey here to let us know your preferences for day/time & topics for the group.

Beginning Mindfulness 
March 2, 9, 16, & 23 at 5:00 p.m. - 6:15 p.m.  
In the four-week series of Beginning Mindfulness, students learn actionable, practical ways to manage stress, build resilience, and gain tools to move forward more confidently into adulthood and to incorporate the practices of mindfulness into daily life. Register here.

Mindfulness 2.0 
March 4, 11, 18, & 25 at 5:00 p.m. - 6:15 p.m. 
Mindfulness 2.0 is a four-session course that builds upon the Beginning Mindfulness course and is designed to help you continue your mindfulness practice and further develop your mindfulness muscle. Register here.

Are you a woman in STEM?  
The Women in STEM Mentorship Program connects STEM women students with STEM women professionals as mentors and role models.  Mentees also participate in our “room full of STEM women” events including workshops, career panels, networking events, and more.  This is a free program, sponsored by Women to Women Mentoring (W2WM), with events held on Zoom. Apply now. Email amy@womantowomanmentoring.org if you have questions.
 
Student Success Fund  
We understand students may require extra support during this time. The FCC Foundation maintains a Student Success Fund for currently enrolled students and is designed to provide temporary, short-term, financial assistance in an emergency. The Student Success Fund is not a scholarship or meant to provide ongoing relief for recurring expenses. It is a stop-gap in a crisis. Apply here. Applications will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

New Tutoring Link in Blackboard 
A new Tutoring & Library tab in Blackboard (located next to the “MyCourses” tab) gives students direct access to remote academic support 7 days a week for many courses. Students can set up appointments with tutors and academic coaches, connect with ThinkingStorm Online Tutoring company, and access online study skills resources.

The Eighth Annual FCC Business Plan Contest
The Eighth Annual FCC Business Plan Contest is now open to any current FCC student enrolled in one or more credit or non-credit classes during the 2020-2021 academic year. Students will create a business idea and develop a complete business plan to be evaluated by a panel of local business leaders. Three winners will be selected and will receive scholarships in the amount of $2,500, $1,500 or $1,000. Learn more.

The FCC Foundation is still accepting applications for:
  • Building Trades Scholarships
  • Hospitality, Culinary and Tourism Institute (HCTI) Scholarships
  • Continuing Education courses (William H. and Marianne E. Browning Memorial Scholarship)

Bookstore
The Bookstore is open for curbside pickup or shipping. Student financial aid may be used for late starting classes as a method of payment for your course materials and supplies. Visit the Bookstore.

FAFSA Assistance 
As a reminder, Maryland’s priority deadline for submission of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is March 1, 2021.If students need assistance with their FAFSA, they can email financialaid@frederick.edu or call (301) 846-2620. Students also have the option of completing the FAFSA/MSFAA Assistance Request Form, which can be accessed by clicking here. A Financial Aid Office staff member will contact you within 1-2 business days of receipt of the form.

Events to Honor Black History Month
Join us in honoring Black History Month and the ongoing movements for justice, equity, and inclusion for Black communities in Frederick, in Maryland, and globally. We honor the labor of many generations of Black Americans to make February a month of celebration and a chance for the nation to begin to honor the ways that Black people have shaped all aspects of life in this land and around the world. Two of our main College-wide 2021 Black History, Pride, and Culture events are included below. All are welcome.   • The Intersections of Blackness: Shattering the Monolith - Thursday, February 25, 2:30 to 4:00 p.m., Zoom. In honor of Black History Month, join FCC students, staff, and instructors as we have a conversation about the powerful diversity within the Black community. Religion, skin color, ethnicity, immigration status, native language, sexuality, generation, multiracial identity, military service, dis/ability, gender, political ideologies, among many other differences, meet and impact Black lives in very specific ways. This conversation will center around what it means to explore Blackness at the intersections and how to find and define yourself outside of other’s perceptions and expectations. All are more than welcome—if you are part of the Black community or aspire to be an ally. This session is co-sponsored by Multicultural Student Services and the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. 
 
  • Black History: A Conversation Between Students from FCC and the Edna Manley School for the Visual and Performing Arts, Kingston, Jamaica - Thursday, February 25, 7:00 - 8:00 p.m., Zoom. Join students from FCC and from the Edna Manley College in Jamaica as we discuss the importance and meaning of Black History, Pride, and Culture to us. This session is sponsored by the Global Learning Committee. 

Supporting Our Immigrant Students who are Undocumented at FCC: Advocacy 101 
Friday, February 26, 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
Join the University Program of FWD.us, a bipartisan political organization, in partnership with the FCC Supporting Undocumented Students Committee, part of the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, to a webinar titled “Advocacy 101.” This webinar will address basic immigration advocacy techniques that students and allies can use to make change on campus and in the community. It is open to FCC students, faculty, and staff of all backgrounds. Join us as we learn, build community, and grow power through advocacy. Mindfulness & Meditation Virtual Retreat 
Saturday, February 27, 1 to 4 p.m., Zoom
The retreat will include practices of meditation, yoga, journaling, and mind/body skills for relaxation and wellness. The retreat is open to beginners and those with experience in these practices as an opportunity to deepen their exploration of mindfulness practices. Sponsored by the Office of Student Engagement.*Must have quiet, uninterrupted space for participation for private reflection and gentle movement. Register here.

May 2021 Graduates
Students who anticipate completing the requirements for an associate degree or certificate are required to apply for graduation through the PeopleSoft Student Center or via the Graduation Application Form. All students need to submit a graduation application to be awarded a credential. Students need to use the graduation application form if applying for multiple credentials and/or a degree that is not their current major.

Confer Date: 05/20/2021

The Center for Student Engagement partners with faculty, staff, student groups, and community organizations to bring dynamic speakers, programs, and events to FCC. We call these events “co-curricular” because they work in concert with academic disciplines, supporting what students learn in class. Click here to view recordings of our recent speakers.

Get Involved with the Student Government Association (SGA) - SGA provides a forum for the expression of student views on issues that affect them and promotes the development of leadership skills for all students.
