THURSDAY TALKS RETURN!

Thursday Talks recommenced in February 2021, with new arrangements in line with ACT COVID-19 restrictions:

 Limited numbers - booking a seat will be essential.

A special booking link will be provided for each week’s talk (see the listing below or on the Friends website). Bookings are open from the Friday prior to the talk until Wednesday night or until seating limits are reached. All tickets are free.

 A COVID-19 safety plan is in place for this event.

All attendees are asked to check in via Check In CBR QR code on arrival. Please follow organisers' directions on seating and social distancing. If any attendees are unable to use a code, then they will be requested to provide first name and phone number for contact tracing.

Please be aware that COVID-19 outbreaks and isolation requirements are subject to change at short notice.

 Please ensure that:

• You have not been in a hotspot or prohibited area before attending Thursday Talks; and
• You do not attend if you are feeling unwell or awaiting the results of a COVID-19 test.

 Time and place: Unless notified otherwise, talks are held from 12:30 pm to 1:30 pm in the ANBG Theatrette. (ANBG and the Friends are exploring the possibility that talks may be made available online in the future).

 Entrance: A small donation to the Friends at the entrance is appreciated. Such funds support the Gardens.

25 February 2021 - Professor Nerilie Abram
'Australia’s black summer and the connection to human-caused climate change'

Professor Abram will talk about the connection between human-caused climate change and Australia's Black Summer.

4 March 2021 - Dr Linda Broadhurst
'Connecting Indigenous and scientific plant names'

This talk will discuss our proposal to co-develop processes and practices with Indigenous communities to connect Indigenous and scientific plant names to improve the conservation and management of our Australian flora.

11 March 2021 - Dr Gemma Hoyle
'Dead, difficult or dormant? Reducing seed waste in grassland restoration and how conservation seed banks can help'

18 March 2021 - John Blay
'Some Special Places of the South East Forests'

John will talk about the challenges of conservation in the region’s forests, along with its peoples and natural history, and the rediscovery of an important shared history pathway. The Bundian Way, now heritage listed, is set to be one of the great Australian walks.

Rodney Garnett - 'Conversations with Photos'

Rodney will share the stories behind some photos captured by his heroes and how stories are an important part of a portfolio. He will also show how stories can be used to generate successful images and illustrate some techniques on how to tell a story in a photo through examples of his work.

Join an exclusive after dark walking tour through the Australian National Botanic Gardens with illuminated live dance, music and spoken word. Experience a unique sensory work created by award winning dance company, Australian Dance Party and collaborating artists.

This intimate open-air experience explores the volatility of the natural world in the age of the Anthropocene. An embodied study of symbiotic relationships: parasitism, mutualism and commensalism, provokes a crucial reflection on human-ecological relationships. The work re-positions the human as a part of nature, and the response-ability we hold in shaping our ecological future.

Friends Botanic Art Groups Exhibition - From the Desert to the Sea

Saturday, 3 April 2021 to Sunday, 2 May 2021
9:30am to 4:30pm daily in the Visitor Information Centre Gallery

The exhibition will feature original works showing a wide variety of native plants, with a special focus on plants from arid regions. Artists have used a variety of media including watercolours, coloured pencils, graphite, pastels and acrylic paints to illustrate plants in an intricate and highly realistic manner. All works are for sale and commissions raise money for the Friends of the Gardens.

Black Mountain Weeding Work Party

Saturday, 6 March 2021 - 8:30am to 11:30am

The next weeding work party will be in the Woodland area of Black Mountain.

Meet: Caswell Drive entry on the mountain side. Drive from Belconnen Way southwards along Caswell Drive towards Glenloch Interchange, Woden, or Tuggeranong. Note the yellow diamond shape advisory sign showing access road on left (mountain side) and the blue and white “P” sign for parking. Pull into the carpark carefully. Look for banners.

Wear: hat, sunscreen, long-sleeved shirt, long pants, gloves, stout shoes.
