5 New DSD Releases

Schubert: Winterreise

Arranged by Wim ten Have for String Quartet and Baritone

Martijn Cornet - Baritone
Ragazze Quartet
Rosa Arnold – Violin
Jeanita Vriens-van Tongeren – Violin
Annemijn Bergkotte – Viola
Rebecca Wise – Cello

This album features a special arrangement of Schubert’s Winterreise by Wim ten Have for the Ragazze Quartet and baritone Martijn Cornet.

You will find that the music on the album delivers warmth, life and depth in the piano part that is emphasized through the string instruments. The performance of Winterreise offers ‘disarming tenderness’ (5-star Review, De Gelderlander).

The Ragazze Quartet contributes not only the sonority of four string instruments, but also the energy of four musicians who at the same time connect with the music and the singer. The challenge, was to remain faithful to Schubert while exploiting to the full the extra possibilities offered by this instrumentation.

The four members of the quartet have immersed themselves in the texts, and, in collaboration with the arranger Wim ten Have, have taken care to create a score perfectly suited to the baritone Martijn Cornet and themselves.

– Hans Eijsackers

Soft Shoulders

Ack van Rooyen, Juraj Stanik

Sound Liaison returns to NativeDSD with another of their popular minimally mic’d recordings. In this case it is a One Mic + Recording of a horn player and a pianist.

Last month, at the age of 90, flugelhornist Ack van Rooyen received the prestigious Boy Edgar Prize, the premier jazz award of the Netherlands. The Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant commemorated the event with this article; Prijs-winnaar Ack van Rooyen ís de Nederlandse jazzgeschiedenis

Here is a slightly shortened and translated version;

Ack van Rooyen seventy years of jazz history – his life. Written by John Schoorl

All these questions, after it was announced that he’d won the Boy Edgar Prize…. What a fuss.. No, he wouldn’t stop blowing now, Why should he? That’ll happen automatically when my time has come. No, he does not think he should have had the prize earlier in his career and no he is not going to start developing an attitude.

The Award is nice, it does something, like getting invited to lunch with the King and the Queen at the Palace. But that being said, having lunch with the King is of course not on the same level as having lunch with Dizzy Gillespie.

I looked at him, that’s what seventy years of jazz history looked like. A not overly grooved face, wavy gray hair, with snappy jokes, dipped in the typical sardonic wit of the city of The Hague. (…)

Ack was a member of the Quincy Jones Orchestra that played at Montreux with Miles Davis three months before his death in 1991. And he played with greats like Dizzy Gillespie, Clark Terry and Lee Konitz. Or for the connoisseurs, with Belgian Jack Sels and the French virtuoso Barney Wilen.

Available from NativeDSD in Stereo DSD 64, DSD 128, DSD 256 and DXD. Exclusively available from NativeDSD in Stereo DSD 512.

La Passione di Gesù Cristo (The Passion of Jesus Christ)

Azione Sacra (Sacred Music) in 2 parts by di Pietro Metastasio
for solos, choir and orchestra by Antonio Salieri
Marco Ozbic choir conductor
Giovanni Pelliccia conductor

Orchestra di Vienna

Matteo Lee Yeong Hwa Pietro
Chiarastella Onorati Giovanni
Michela Sburlati Maddalena
Roberto Abbondanza Giuseppe d’Arimatea

This double album in Stereo DSD 64 was produced and recorded by Giulio Cesare Ricci at Minoritenkirche, Minoritenplatz in Vienna on May 2000. This is a live recording made in the church where Antonio Salieri was buried. The choice of this location was dictated by its wonderful acoustics which allowed Fone to obtain an exceptional recording of this music.

La Passione di Gesù Cristo (The Passion of Jesus Christ) is an oratorio written by Pietro Metastasio poet, dramatist, librettist considered the reformer of Italian melodrama. The oratorio represents a detachment from the settings of the passion stories present in the Gospel, towards a more theatrical style.

The four central roles are those of S. Pietro, St. Giovanni, Maria Maddalena e Giuseppe d’Arimatea who answer Pietro’s questions about the crucifixion. The content is spiritual motivated by the solid tradition of oratorial executions that took place in the imperial chapel during the period of Lent and Holy Week.

To enhance the Minoritenkirche acoustics, Giulio Cesare Ricci used the original Neumann U47 and M49 tube microphones, advanced microphone pre-amplifiers from Nagra, the Nagra 4 Analog Tape Recorder with line, microphone and supply cables designed by Signor Ricci. The Original Analog Master was transferred from the Nagra 4s Analog Recorder directly to Stereo DSD 64. With this recording, Giulio Cesare Ricci wanted the listener to live a unique experience: it is as if he were sitting on an armchair positioned in the ideal position of the Minoritenkirche.

Available from NativeDSD in Stereo DSD 64.

Singer Carmen Gomes Special

The albums by singer Carmen Gomes are always among the most popular and best selling DSD and DXD releases at NativeDSD Music. Today, we bring you some very special news about them.

Extra fun! Every Carmen Gomes album purchase comes with an exclusive-to-NativeDSD video of the track “How Long”, made during the recording session of the album Don’t You Cry! The video is included in the ZIP of each of these albums.

“As I am writing this I am listening with my player randomly playing through these Sound Liaison recordings with Carmen Gomes Inc., I notice similarities and differences.

If I name the similarities first, that’s the easy list.

It’s the same band, recorded in the same room by the same engineer. The sound of the albums all have the Frans de Rond’s Visual Sound signature: great depth, clear placement and an almost physical presence of the musicians.

As each album was created in very different circumstances the list of differences is longer. Below I take you ‘backstage’ at the recording sessions of Carmen Gomes’ three DSD and DXD releases, available at NativeDSD Music.”
