Nicola West Publication & New Periodontal Treatment Guideline Recommendations

Secretary of the British Society of Periodontology and Implant Dentistry
Secretary General of the European Federation of Periodontology

In 2020-2021, Nicola led a workshop on behalf of the British Society of Periodontology and Implant Dentistry (BSP), which involved taking the European Federation of Periodontology S3-level Periodontal Treatment Guideline document, and developing a UK version, suitable for the UK healthcare system. The aim of the guideline is to improve the quality of periodontal care delivered, the patients’ overall health and quality of life.

Nicola involved many stakeholders in this project, from a variety of organisations, to gain a broader insight and include different perspectives when reviewing the clinical recommendations. The working group meetings took place during lockdown and comprised of dental professionals, medical experts, key healthcare stakeholders and BSP Patient Forum who were all committed to rapidly review the European guidelines. 15 systematic reviews were distilled to 62 recommendations which were agreed by consensus and resulted in the S3-level (highest level) periodontal treatment guidelines for the UK. The paper was published in the Journal of Dentistry.

A flowchart has been produced including video of Nicola, Alex Pollard and Dominic Clark-Roberton from Bristol Dental School and will be distributed to all dental practices and Schools throughout the UK supported by a grant from GSK. Information is available here about the variety of resources the BSP has produced to assist the wider dental community in interpreting the guidelines, and to empower patients with information to take responsibility for aspects of their disease management.

Funding & Opportunities:
  • ***RED FOHS list of funding opportunities***
  • Philip Leverhulme Prize 2021: These prizes recognise researchers at an early stage of their careers whose work has had international impact and whose future research career is exceptionally promising. Every year the prize scheme makes up to thirty awards of £100,000, across a range of academic disciplines. Please note that no institution may submit more than three nominations in any prize area. As these are individual prizes and not research funding applications, RED will not be running a major bids process for the call, therefore Heads of Schools/Heads of Department, School Research Directors and Faculty research directors will therefore need to consider demand management procedures due to the institutional cap. The 2021 round closes for nominations at 16:00 on 17 May 2021.
  • MRes Health Sciences Research call for projects: Requesting project proposals for the MRes in Health Sciences Research from researchers within the Schools of the Faculties of Health Sciences and Life Sciences. The Programme is primarily aimed at intercalating clinicians (post 3rd year medics, dentists and vets), bioscience graduates and recently qualified medics, dentists and vets who wish to develop their research skills. The emphasis of the Programme is a ~8-month research project (carried out November 2021 – July 2022), for which the supervisor receives a £4,000 bench fee for project costs. If you would like to propose a project, please complete the attached form and email it to Fiona Holmes at healthsciences-mres@bristol.ac.uk (no need to email form again if offering a previously submitted project, just let Fiona know) by Monday 8 March 2021.
