BOOKS

Hair Love by Matthew Cherry:
This book is based on an animated short film by the same name. It is a sweet story about a father and his daughter and how they work together to make her feel like her hair is special and magical rather than a burden.  It is a lovely story to read with young children because it helps to show them how aspects and characteristics of themselves make them who they are. And, who they are is incredibly unique, special, and amazing.  It is also a great example of how a parent and child can work together to solve challenges that can occur in every day routines.

Goodnight, Goodnight Construction Site by Sherri Dudley Rinker & Tom Lichtenheld:
This is a well loved favorite and a great read at bedtime or really any point in the day. For those little ones that are in the phase of being thrilled by anything related to construction, this one will be a sure delight. It is a fun read and exposes kids to repetitive language patterns through the descriptive and rhyming wording. The pictures are colorful and depict friendly construction vehicles that kids are drawn to. The book does a nice job of using simple explanations and names for each construction vehicle for kids to understand.  Plus, it is fun for kids to think that their favorite trucks need rest and go to sleep at night just like they do. Happy reading!

MUSIC

Sing along with teacher Dara as you and your toddler practice stacking blocks!
MOTOR

Construction workers use tools for many purposes. This week we will be practicing using a hammer as a tool. If you have a construction hard hat and safety goggles you can also encourage your child to pretend to be a construction worker or carpenter. Using a toy hammer or xylophone mallet, you can have your child hammer golf tees into Styrofoam or a carboard box. Another hammer activity could be rolling balls with play dough and using the hammer to smash the balls.

ART

To celebrate Black History Month and the different features that make us unique, help your child make a self-portrait! Cut the outline of a face from colored construction paper. Using magazine cutouts, pipe cleaners, yarn, or any other craft materials you have on hand, help your child glue objects to the face to represent eyes, nose, hair, etc. and talk about each one as you do. Get creative with your materials! Our Instructional Assistant, Eseye, used black sesame seeds and coffee beans to give some texture to her portrait's hair in the example below.
PS. As we face this pandemic, philanthropic support is more crucial than ever! Gifts of all amounts will make a significant impact. Please consider making a gift today to help meet the most urgent needs of our Boyer community.
