MSCCH Annual Conference

WHPCA is a state affiliate of the Medical Society Consortium on Climate and Health (MSCCH), which will be hosting its annual conference from May 21-May 25. Attendees will learn about the actions taken by the President and Congress to address climate change with policy solutions.  Then attendees will practice the key messages describing the medical promise of climate solutions and visit Congress (through online platforms).

Join your colleagues on May 25 to share those messages and express your support for policy solutions.   Because appointments with Congress must be scheduled in advance, registration closes on May 7.  Please register today to attend the meeting and participate in visits to your representatives in Congress.

April is Earth Month!

Due to an unusually large amount of events from our partners, we decided not to list them all in today's newsletter.  Instead, check out WHPCA's event webpage.

The Health Benefits of Cycling

This report shows that if bicycling nationwide increased to six percent of trips, the rate in Madison, it would have the following benefits:
  • Reduce deaths from chronic disease in the US by 20,000/year
  • Lower cardiovascular disease by 28,000 cases/year and diabetes by  22,000 cases/year
  • Improve air quality to save $780 million a year in health costs & avert about 7,000 days of work lost to illness
  • Provide about $1.2 billion/year in global benefits due to climate change mitigation

Energy Burden In Milwaukee

This analysis explores the legacy of racist housing policies, and job and income discrimination, that contributes to energy burden. In some areas of Milwaukee, Black, Hispanic and Latinx households may pay over 10% of their income for utilities, or risk getting their power shut off.

Fossil Fuel Racism

Fossil fuels — coal, oil, and gas — lie at the heart of the crises we face, including public health, racial injustice, and climate change. This report synthesizes existing research and provides new analysis that finds that the fossil fuel industry contributes to public health harms that kill hundreds of thousands of people in the U.S. each year and disproportionately endanger Black, Brown, Indigenous, and poor communities.

Your Donation Can Build A Healthier Wisconsin
To continue achieving our goals, we need the resources for our Executive Director, Abby Lois, to be able to work full-time.  Abby catalyzes the work of health professionals who go-on to organize their colleagues, and therefore, each hour of her work has a high-yield impact. Please consider donating to WHPCA so we can amplify our power and build a healthier world.
