February is Black History Month
ISO will highlight each week on Facebook and in our newsletter a TED talk given by a Black intellectual or artist

Week 3:
Can Art Amend History?
(Titus Kaphar | TED2017)

Black History Month has its origins in 1915 when historian Carter G. Woodson and Jesse E. Moorland founded an organization now known as the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH). They first sponsored a national Negro History Week in 1926, choosing the second week of February to coincide with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. With each ensuing decade, more and more schools, communities, and cities across the country were inspired to organize local celebrations. In the late 1960s, due to the civil rights movement and growing awareness of Black identity, Negro History week evolved into Black History Month on many college campuses.

In 1976, President Gerald Ford officially designated the month of February “Black History Month,” calling upon the public to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.”

Resources on Filing Annual Income Tax Returns
Glacier Tax Prep Software Now Available
Save date for Tax Workshop on Tuesday, March 2
Each year, by April 15, every international student, individuals in certain other nonimmigrant visa statuses, as well as American Citizens and Permanent Residents, are required to file a Federal income tax return with the U.S. Government (and in some cases also need to file a State income tax return in each state that the individual resided) based on any physical presence in the U.S. during the previous calendar year.

The April 15, 2021 deadline is to file income tax returns for all who had been physically present in the U.S. during the 2020 calendar year. Students physically inside the U.S. during 2020, whether they worked or not, are required to file an income tax return. Students who have worked at MIT during 2020, including receiving assistantships or fellowships, will receive the necessary documents needed to complete their income tax returns by the end of February 2021.

MIT provides a number of resources to support international students completing their required income tax returns. Links to the available resources are available on the ISO Taxes webpage (https://iso.mit.edu/maintaining-status/taxes/).

A brief overview of the available tax resources are as follows:

Tax Guidance for Non-Resident Tax Filers
The MIT Office of the Vice President for Finance, in cooperation with the International Scholars Office (ISchO) and the International Students Office (ISO), created a website for foreign nationals to provide resources and links related to receiving payments from MIT and guidance on income taxes. This is the best place to start with any questions about taxes and filing your income tax returns.

MIT Tax Workshop
The MIT Office of the Vice President for Finance will host an online Tax Workshop for students and scholars on Tuesday, March 2, 2021. Details will be provided as we get closer to the workshop date and on the VPF website.

Glacier Tax Prep Software
The ISO makes available to MIT international students for free a license for the Glacier Tax Prep software to assist in completing the Federal income tax return. The software is available now. The ISO will email all MIT international students once the software is available. We hope this information is helpful and we will be sure to email students when additional updates are available.

Welcome to the spring semester and say goodbye to winter by letting go of unneeded fashion items at the Second MIT/Harvard Live Fashion Market!
Join this livestream shopping event to buy and sell items from your classmates' closets and give new life to old items.

Who We Are:
Founded at MIT Sloan, SdreamStyle is launching a shopping as entertainment platform where sellers can offer their own clothing and accessories to buyers through video livestream.  We're looking to test out the platform through a series of campus experiments.
What We're Doing:
We are looking for buyers and sellers to join our live shopping event. Sellers can show off their clothes and accessories during the 1-hour event, and answer any questions such about fit, composition, quality, etc.  Buyers can engage directly with sellers and from the platform.
Who You Are:
All MIT and Harvard students are welcome!
Sellers must be in Boston to participate. Buyers can be remote and coordinate pickup with sellers when they are back on campus. If you will not be in Boston for the event, please check out one of our other events in New York or Philadelphia!

Study Shakespeare in Prison!

Shakespeare Behind Bars and Across the Globe

Shakespeare wrote in times of plague, protest, and social division: we will explore how his plays speak and circulate now, re-mediated as books, films, television series, images, and more. We will also create a unique community of students learning together at a distance, with some in a Maine women’s correctional facility, others in dorm rooms and still others at family homes, apartments or hostels.

With all this as context, we will highlight dramas of isolation and social struggle, reading and viewing Hamlet, The Merchant of Venice, Richard II, 1 Henry IV, King Lear and The Tempest, with special attention to the challenges of cross-cultural filmic translation and the importance of collaborative artistic processes across media—including in the synchronous Zoom classroom!

Contact: dianah@mit.edu or sign up for 21L.431: Shakespeare in Film and Media, and I’ll offer a slot through the waitlist in the Registrar’s office.
