Warning for Monday - most of coast
A broad low pressure trough lies off the northern NSW coast, with a low pressure embedded within this system. South to southeasterly winds will strengthen through northern and central parts with strong winds and large waves possible for over the coming days. The southern parts remain northeasterly due to a high that is pulling away and tend southerly from Monday and strengthen to strong winds.

BOM has issued warnings for Monday for the Illawarra all the way to the Byron coast, for large and powerful surf conditions expected to be hazardous for coastal activities such as crossing bars by boat and rock fishing.

Seas will be 2.5 to 3.5 metres plus mixed southerly and easterly swells of 2.5 to 3.5 metres. Swell period will be quite short, around just 10 seconds.

Check local forecasts on the BOM website at http://www.bom.gov.au/nsw/forecasts/map.shtml

Always tell someone where you are going and when you plan on coming back. If the rock platform is wet ask yourself 'why is it wet?' then watch the ocean for waves and swells for at least 20 minutes. Always fish with a friend, wear proper rockfishing footwear, light warm high-visibility clothing, and wear a life jacket in case you get washed in. Never turn your back on the ocean.

Also check out the links and safety advice on BOM's dedicated rock-fishing weather page.

Whenever you fish

  • choose a safe spot
  • don't fish alone
  • wear non-slip shoes
  • wear a life jacket
  • never turn your back on the sea.
