Volunteer opportunities for youth

The Maple Ridge Climate Hub is sponsoring workshops that empower youth to take action on climate change.

Workshops are led by trained youth facilitators and offered to high school aged groups. Students explore their own climate stories and discover ways to be a climate advocate right in their own communities.

We're looking for volunteer facilitators to deliver the Youth Climate Ambassador workshops to students in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. If you are:

  • committed to climate action
  • a champion of climate justice
  • inspired to empower youth
  • between the ages of 17 and 24

... we want to hear from you!

Plastics begone

The federal government recently reaffirmed its commitment to reduce plastic pollution, but the plastics lobby is working hard to make sure it doesn’t happen.

Environmental Defence is making it dead easy for us to let Prime Minister Trudeau and Environment Minister Wilkinson know we support listing plastic as a Toxic Substance, and banning single-use plastics.

Send a letter to the government expressing your support for these two important initiatives.

While the federal government is working on a pan-Canadian framework for reducing plastic pollution, there is still work to be done at the provincial and local levels. The province recently cleared the way for municipalities to ban single-use plastics, and as part of Plastic Pollution Awareness Day they've approved the bans in Surrey, Nanaimo, Esquimalt and Rossland.

Electric vehicles surging worldwide

If you saw GM’s ad during the Super Bowl you may still be cracking up over Will Farrell taking umbrage at Norway outstripping North America in the purchase of electric vehicles. It was a cheeky way for GM to announce their ambition to phase out production of gas- and diesel-powered vehicles by 2035.

That does sound audacious until you look at Norway’s goals and recent record. The Nordic country plans to end the sale of fossil fuel-powered vehicles by 2025, and they became the first country in the world to surpass the 50% mark, with electric vehicles taking 54% of market share in 2020.

Meanwhile, Harley-Davidson is polishing up its badass reputation with an entry into the e-bike market. Their Serial 1 brand bikes are specifically designed for urban commuting and will be ready for delivery this summer.

Closer to home Trek Bikes has a full range of electric bicycles from hybrids to mountain bikes. Watch their kicky little intro video and get inspired.
