The Dog Debate  - Proposed Bye Law Change

Further to previous updates on the proposal to allow members to bring dogs into a restricted area of the lawn, the sub-committee appointed by the Main Committee, together with the Main Committee and the various sub committees of the club, have been working hard behind the scenes to present a paper to the membership, and this will be available to be membership after 28th February, on the Sailing Club Manager platform.

The membership (all those aged over 18)  will be invited to vote on the propsed change to the bye law in the newsletter of 28th March, and the vote will remain open until 7th April.  Results will be announced in the following newsletter, and if adopted, the necessary signage and associated fencing will be put in place shortly thereafter.

In order to vote all members over the age of 18  (on 28th March)  will need to have an individual unique email address registered on the newsletter distribution system.

Many families and couples at present only have one family member registered to receive newsletters.   Those who wish to be included in the vote and are not currently registered, should send their name and email address together with the lead member’s name on the membership to
newsletter@papercourt-sc.org.uk so that they can be included on the distribution list (all such requests will be checked against the membership database to ensure a current membership/eligibility).  If members would like their email to only be included for the duration of this process, please make that clear in your email, and your email will deleted once the voting process is complete.
Dinghy Instructors Wanted

If you love your sport, and would like to pass your enthusiasm, knowledge and skills onto others, we would love to hear from you.   The Club are keen to hear from Cadets and Adults who would like to qualify as Assistant Instructor or Dinghy Instructor.

All we ask in return is some of your time to help deliver either Youth Training or Adult Training at the Club.

Or it may be that you are already a Dinghy Instructor or a lapsed Dinghy Instructor, in which case we would also love to get you back involved in Instructing at the Club.

If you would like to chat about what's involved, please contact fraserhayden@hotmail.com

ICS at Papercourt - A letter from Jae Willis

Dear Club Member,

ICS has been running outstanding sailing courses for young people since 1980. Due to the Corona Virus we were forced to cancel our 2020 Easter courses but we did manage to run one summer course last year. It was very nearly the first year in forty years that we did not run any courses. The 2020 summer course was a great success with the instructor team doing a fine job of implementing social distancing. With our already existing system of splitting the skippers up into sailing groups relative to their ability and teams based on friend groups, age and sailing group allocation, we were able to limit the number of other people that each skipper came into contact with to the allotted 14. This included their group instructors.

Thanks to the system mentioned above, our courses are suitable for all levels, from complete beginner to advanced race training. We use Optimists and Toppers and cater for an age range of 7 – 16. ICS instructors are RYA qualified, with racing groups run by qualified race coaches. We provide a positive learning environment and our courses are student-focused with the individual success of each child (suited to their own capability) as a core ethos. Success in this sense can mean an increase in confidence on the water for one skipper, as much as it can mean improving racing skills for another. Grades achieved with us should reflect the actual level of the skipper. Dates for our proposed courses for 2020 are set out below - Covid permitting.  Days run from 0930 – 1800 and there are still places available. To register use the online form on our website.  If you’d like to discuss any details regarding the course, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Best wishes, Jae Jae Willis Principal – ICS 07961 964 354 icscourses@yahoo.co.uk www.icscourses.co.uk

Committee Profile - Jenny Snow - in her own words

I started sailing  at about age 4, when my Dad and his friend built a wooden dinghy in the garage, and the two families took it on many many holidays both at home and in France and Spain.  It was the best equipped small dinghy ever with main, jib, spinnaker, oars and outboard.   Later we towed a Firefly for Summer Holidays.   Then my Dad moved into bigger boats so dinghy sailing took a back seat.   Fast Forward to my early twenties and my new boyfriend (we have now been married 39 years) was into Windsurfing so weekends were spent getting quite wet!

We joined Papercourt in 1996 when our oldest was 7 and we inherited the family Optimist from his cousins who all learnt to sail at Papercourt. (The oppie is still on site I believe, named Emael)   We soon got tired of just watching, so both Peter and I acquired our own dinghies (Laser and Topper) and started taking courses and racing.   For a while Peter was one of the youth organisers and also head of House Committee.

The redoubtable Sylvia tapped my shoulder to become an instructor, (I was already a swimming and ski instructor) then someone else tapped my shoulder to take over the newsletter and for several years before Covid, I also ran quiz nights at the club - looking forward to the day when we can do that again.

Now I am joint Rear Commodore on the Main Committee with a particular interest in the Sailing Programme and Adult Training as well as writing the Newsletter every two weeks; and look forward to helping the club to maintain and progress its already formidable reputation as a Racing and Training facility in the years to come, whilst remaining volunteer run and the most friendly club around.
