Changes to the Auckland border
The Auckland region is again at Alert Level 3. The horticulture industry’s advocacy has resulted in the placement of the southern border further south so that Pukekohe is part of the Auckland region and border crossings are not necessary.
One thing we are sure of is that independent fruit and vegetable retailers can remain open at Alert Level 3, which is different to last time.

Operating during Alert Level 3, Auckland
Under Alert Level 3, the primary industries – including growers and packhouses – are allowed to keep operating and cross borders.
Workers involved in food and beverage production, processing and supply, and freight are permitted to cross the borders. In other words, they do not need to apply for an exemption but documentation is needed for border crossings.
As soon as they can, businesses are asked to register with the new Business.govt.nz system (click here to apply), which will automatically provide workers with a QR code that they can place on the dashboard when crossing the border. (Please note that individuals need a RealMe account to start the registration process, on behalf of their business.)
But in the interim, like last time, we have been advised that workers should carry a letter from their employer stating that they are involved in an essential service/industry, as well as photo ID (such as a Driver’s Licence).
Click here for a template letter that you can adapt to your needs.
Please note that from Tuesday, QR codes are likely to be mandatory.

Independent fruit and vegetable retailers to remain open
Under Alert Level 3, unlike last time, independent fruit and vegetable retailers can remain open, but must ‘minimise, or eliminate if possible, physical interactions among staff and with and between customers ensure appropriate health, hygiene and safety measures are in place’.
