The southern pineapple - a story of hope and happy memories
Sandra Pietrolungo
What is it about us that drives us to push boundaries and attempt to achieve the impossible?
As a child, I curiously observed my Mum always trying to grow things that generally wouldn’t grow in our cool climate - with little success beyond germination. As an adult, I too succumbed to the habit of pushing boundaries, but it never extended to tropical fruits. Back in 2010, I bought myself a greenhouse, predominantly to get a head start on my seedlings.
My mother, very excited about my greenhouse, proceeded to convince me to put in her three potted pineapple plants, which she grew from tops cut off from pineapples the family had devoured - some years ago. After some futile arguing on my part, I eventually agreed to relinquish some of the valuable space in my greenhouse (to ‘three pots that will never amount to anything yet scratch me every chance they have'). After all, mum was unwell and it made her happy.
Mum passed away a bit before Christmas 2010. The pineapples continued to squat in my greenhouse, I watered them, very occasionally fed them and often wondered why they were still there.
A year passed by and in late December 2011, I spotted an unusual colour in the very centre of the spikey leaves - I couldn’t believe what I saw. After several years, the first signs of a tiny, baby pineapple. I could only think of it as a little gift from my mum, twelve months after her passing...or was it her way of saying ‘I told you so?’
Regardless, along with a tear, it gave me a beautiful, happy memory of my Mum. The pineapple took six months to grow and ripen and, albeit small, it was sliced and enjoyed by my husband and me and our five children. The sweetest part of it all was the happy memory
