PhD Forum:
Very popular seminar on academic CV building
On Monday, 22nd February, the first of two seminars led by Mahaut and Friederike took place and it was a great success. About 20 students had signed up for the session on “how to build your academic CV”. In a 2 hours virtual meeting Mahaut and Friederike explained which aspects should be covered in a CV to pave the way for a successful career in academia. We discussed which qualifications are required and how to outline them in a CV.
This was greatly welcomed by students at the beginning of their PhD journey, since they got inputs for the development of a strategy. More advanced students could benefit from exemplary CV’s provided by Friederike and tips from Mahaut on how to present your CV in an adequate way.
Many questions from the participants made this an interactive forum and might show the wish for a longer and in-depth workshop on this topic.
On 15th March, we will have the second seminar with our research advisor duo, this time presenting “funding opportunities during and right after a PhD contract”. An invitation with sign-up link will be sent out soon.

The Bjerknes PhD Forum
The Bjerknes PhD Forum is open for all PhDs affiliated with the Bjerknes Centre.
The Forum intends to create a community for international and Norwegian PhD students from different research areas during their time in Bergen.
Our aim is to facilitate exchange among new and advanced PhD students as well as to distribute and preserve knowledge about “the way things work”.
We meet about once a month to network and discuss different aspects of the academic career and/or life in Bergen. Visiting PhD students and interns are welcome to join our activities.
The current PhD Forum Board members are:
Sonja Wahl (leader) – Sonja.wahl@uib.no
Maaike Zwier (co-leader) - maaike.zwier@uib.no
Elina Efstathiou (contact person for new PhDs) - Evangelia.Efstathiou@uib.no

Iselin Medhaug started working at NORCE as a senior advisor from February 1, and she is the coordinator of Climate Futures. In Climate Futures, she will mainly be responsible for stakeholder interaction, community building and coordinating the activities in the center. Iselin has a PhD in climate dynamics from the UiB (GFI) where she was also a part of the Bjerknes center.

The portrait
Name:
Basile de Fleurian
Position:
Researcher
How long have you been at BCCR?
Since December 2015
Education:
Engineer degree and PhD in Earth Science
|
|
|
Background:
I grew up close to Lyon (France) before moving to Paris for a few years to get my Engineer degree. I gladly moved back to Grenoble and the mountains to get on with my PhD. After that I took somewhat of a long sabbatical doing atmospheric chemistry in Antarctica. I then got on with Post-Doc life first in Grenoble, then in California before ending up in Bergen.
What is it you do exactly at work?
My main occupation is to translate real world physics into mathematical equations that can be solved by the computer sitting on my desk. I am mostly interested by what happens at the base of glaciers where the interaction between the ice, the rock and sometimes water define most of the dynamics of glaciers. I can then apply these models to get a better understanding of those processes and their potential evolution.
Why climate research?
I define myself more has a glaciologist than a climate scientist. My main interest is to understand the physics of the glaciers and their dynamics to evaluate how they will be impacted by a change in climate.
What extracurricular activities do you have?
I used to ski a lot and start hiking when the snow was melted. Nowadays it seems that taking care of my daughter is taking precedence over that (we still hike and ski altogether though).
Do you have a favourite song, band or artist?
I mostly listen to the sound of silence, but it is a good song too.
Your favourite food?
Cheese, but I hope I am allowed bread to go with it.
The best and worst about Bergen?
I really enjoy the low commitment to go hiking around which is nice when the weather is not so good. I miss a bit a diversity of landscapes, fjords are amazing but sometimes I would enjoy rolling hills with cows
