Live Well Wakefield - Shortlisted for Award!

Live Well Wakefield has been shortlisted in the category of Best Larger Social Prescribing Project in the Social Prescribing Awards 2021.

Live Well offers social prescribing services right across the Wakefield District and over the past 12 months has adapted their delivery to ensure the support remains available during the Covid-19 pandemic. In that time they have supported over 3,000 people to access services to improve their health and wellbeing and ensured vulnerable people have access to essentials like food and medication.

Service Manager, Rebecca Bibbs had this to say about the news:

“I'm always very proud of Live Well Wakefield and the whole team, but this year I am particularly proud to be shortlisted for such an award. The team has not only supported thousands of people to get access to food, medication, social activities, financial support and much more but they have done this whilst feeling anxious, uncertain and fretful themselves. We've all had to pull together and support each other and we could not have done it without our partner organisations, so thank you to everyone in the Wakefield system that has supported us.”

The news came as part of a double header for the Live Well service as Advisor Darren Dooler was also shortlisted for the award for Most Inspirational Person. The award, Supported by NHS England and NHS Improvement aims to identify a person who has benefitted from a social prescribing scheme and has since gone on to help and support others. Darren, or Daz as he is better known, was nominated by his colleagues who recognised his inspirational journey and the impact he is now having on the lives of others through his work as a social prescribing advisor, self-management tutor and through the creation of S.M.a.S.H, the Self-help and Self-Management support group he helped establish and is heavily involved with.

Alzheimer’s Society Wakefield Update

Please see update from Katty Keyhani, Dementia Connect Local Services Manager – Leeds & Wakefield:
The start of pandemic, we had to act quickly to ensure that people with dementia and their loved ones will continue receiving the vital support at the time of their needs.
Shortly after start of pandemic, we have decided to close our local office at Wakefield to put more resources into what was more important to people with dementia.
Although we do not have an office at Wakefield our services are busier than ever and we are continuing to offer services to people with dementia, carers, relatives, friends and communities across the Wakefield district.
Our Dementia Support Workers are working from home, providing person centred advice and support via phone calls. The team can continue to provide specialist support in this way, whilst adhering to the latest government guidelines regarding social distancing.
In addition to their usual services, the Wakefield Alzheimer’s Society is now:
  • Offering regular welfare calls to vulnerable and isolated individuals by Dementia Support Workers
  • Offering wider companion calls through volunteers for people that are isolated or lonely (available to both people with dementia and carers).
  • Offering virtual Singing for the Brain sessions every Wednesday afternoon, 4pm-5pm. These sessions use singing to bring people with dementia together for a friendly and stimulating activity.
  • Offering an Introduction to Dementia virtual drop in, alternate Tuesdays 12.00pm - 1.15pm.
The team accept self-referrals for welfare and companion calls from anyone affected by dementia, and referrals from other professionals where consent has been given. You can contact the Society, Monday to Friday, 9am - 5pm, by: telephone 01924 373264 / 07872 503419 or email wakefield@alzheimers.org.uk.
