Message from the President

Informing Local Leaders

Dear JLT Friends, Investors and Community Leaders,

It made national news-- Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow, indicating 6 more weeks of wintery, cold weather. But don’t be fooled, JLT is heating things up!

Our 60th anniversary legacy project is underway and interested local and regional artist teams can submit their qualifications online through February 19th. We are also working with local businesses, chambers of commerce, and organizations to identify the appropriate location for our public mural. If you own or manage a building or wall with high street visibility, please consider letting us know by completing this form.

Later this month, our slate of 2021-2022 Board of Directors and Management Team Members will be released to our Membership. These women and many more are already leading in unbelievable ways and I cannot wait to see them take the next step in the JLT leadership journey.

Lastly, read below how our Training Council is bringing a highly recognized name to our local community for a training and conversion about structural inequality.

Be the one,

Samantha Sexton

2020-2021 President

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Within JLT and Our Community

The Junior League of Tallahassee's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion committee has a really exciting training opportunity and we are offering seats to Tallahassee community members at a reduced rate.  We've contracted with the brilliant Natalie Gillard to facilitate a virtual session of her Factuality game for our community.

Factuality is a facilitated dialogue, crash course, and interactive experience, that simulates structural inequality, in America.  Participants assume the identities of one of eight characters, encountering a series of fact-based advantages and limitations based on the intersection of their race, class, gender, faith, sexual orientation, age, and ability.

Our virtual session will be held over Zoom on Tuesday, February 23, 2021 from 11:00 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Seats are $15 per attendee and are extremely limited.

Participants can purchase seats here. Anyone interested in more information can learn about Natalie, Factuality, and see a list of all the amazing Fortune 500 companies, major universities, and non-profits who have already participated in Factuality here: https://www.factualitythegame.com/

JLT Promotes Early Learning at Big Bend Homeless Coalition's HOPE Community

Pre-pandemic, JLT participated in HOPE's Bedtimes Stories program in which weekly volunteers would read children's books and complete activities with the young children at HOPE Community. "Bedtime stories – while on the surface – are heartwarming interactions of children and volunteers, they provide, through the intimacy of learning an opportunity to build on reading comprehension skills, activities that provide interactions with hands, and development of fine motor skills," says Audrey Byrne, Development Director at HOPE Community. "Bedtime stories also play a significant role in helping our Family and Early Childhood Case Specialist in identifying children who may need more resources and encouraging parents to approve their child for a developmental screening."

During the pandemic, JLT had to get creative in how we continued this service with HOPE Community. This year, we have been providing #ownvoices picture books so that parents at HOPE Community can read as a family unit. We have also been providing virtual storytime for the children living at HOPE Community to access on their own or with their families. If you would like to aid the JLT in our mission to provide educational and diverse picture books to the children at HOPE Community, you can purchase books from our wish list and have them shipped directly to HOPE.

For questions about this project, please contact Olivia Bushardt & Chelsea Plotner, hope@jltallahassee.org. For more information about BBHC's HOPE Community, please visit their website BigBendHC.org.

Upcoming Projects

JLT Mural

We are well on our way to bringing our 60th Anniversary mural to fruition. Our advisory council has been selected and is meeting bi-weekly to oversee the execution of the mural. We have initiated the search to local artists to submit their ideas for mural design.

If you know of an artist that would be interested in submitting a design, please reach out to president@jltallahassee.org or directly share this Request for Qualifications form

Community Impact

Mighty Meals

You are invited to join our annual Mighty Meals event by sponsoring one or more needed food items. A Mighty Meals box is stuffed with easy to prepare items and provides enough food to feed a family of 4 during the week of spring break at no cost to participating families! Along with providing adequate nutritious ingredients, the box will also contain recipes, nutritional information, and fun activities for the children.

In our first year, JLT distributed 180 boxes totaling over 15,000 meals. Our second annual event scheduled for March 2021 will provide an even greater impact to food insecurity by serving over 18,000 meals to children and families in our community.

We hope that you will consider working with JLT to combat hunger in our community and ensure students have a healthy, nutritious Spring Break.

Please email mightymeals@jltallahassee.org if you are interested in sponsoring one or more of these items.

ICYMI:

Free Digital Library

Last week, the Speaker of the Florida House Chris Sprowls announced a statewide partnership with Age of Learning, the creators of ReadingIQ, to generously provide Florida families and students with immediate, free access to their digital library. Florida families can visit ReadingIQ.com/newworlds and set up their free account to access a comprehensive digital library.

JLT will continue to share this exciting development with our community partners.

Sponsorships

To aid us in our mission of improving the lives of children and families in the Tallahassee area, JLT relies on the generosity of sponsorships and donations to enhance our community impact. When an organization financially supports the League, we support the organization in return by valuable recognition and exposure to both our members and the general public through online and in-person channels. The League consistently fosters strong partnerships with our sponsors, and we would love to work with you or your organization next!

To learn more about how you can become a JLT Sponsor, please click here to review our sponsorship or email Samantha Ferrin at sponsorship@jltallahassee.org for more information.
