Exhibitions
Tides Institute & Museum of Art
Maine Bicentennial Book
As part of Maine’s Bicentennial, the Tides Institute & Museum of Art mounted an exhibition of works from its collections ranging in date from 1820 to the present. In addition, the Tides Institute will publish a Bicentennial book featuring 100 works from its collections and the stories behind the works and how they came into the Tides Institute’s collection. Each week, one of the selected works will be featured in CulturePass.
This week’s piece is an early 19th century map of the Passamaquoddy Bay and Machias region by Benjamin R. Jones, surveyor. The full title of the map is: “A Map & Chart of the Bays Harbours Poft Roads and Settlements in Passamaquoddy & Machias With the large Island of Grand Manan. Compiled from Actual Survey by B.R. Jones, Surveyor.” The map was first published in 1810 with additions to the plate made in 1822 soon after Maine became a state. The engraving of the map was produced by T. Wightman of Boston, Massachusetts. Benjamin Jones was born in Milton, Massachusetts in 1776. His family moved to what is now Robbinston, Maine in 1788. As a young man with a wife and children, Jones moved to Eastport, Maine in 1803 to serve as town clerk, and then two years later, to Dennysville where he took a job teaching school. More of Benjamin R. Jones' story and how his work came to the Tides Institute can be viewed in detail here.
