Alfred Hitchcock said, “Drama is life with the dull bits cut out.”
In Scriptwriting, we work on getting rid of all that is unnecessary in our scripts and heighten what is necessary and exciting for the drama. We slash out all dull bits to keep our audience engaged in the essence of the story.
There has been a lot written in recent years about how applying screenwriting principles to our lives can increase the quality of our days.
When it comes to the dull bits of life it is hard, if not impossible, to cut these out. Life is full of dull bits, especially these days as we have spent weeks inside due to cold temperatures and almost a year limiting social gatherings and fun outings. Sometimes our daily faith walk is full of so many dull bits that we don’t remember God’s movement and provisions within the day.
I appreciate Annie Dilliard’s words, “How we spend our days is indeed how we spend our years.” My prayer is that God will grant me the humility to see His work and calling, the heart to respond to the needs of others and the patience to praise our Lord for the day that he has made…including all of the dull bits.
