COVID-19 CAMPUS UPDATE

"Even though we are moving to GREEN we are still required to follow CDC and MDH guidelines, there are not a lot of changes in our daily operations.  I recognize that we are all weary but let us continue diligently in our mitigation efforts:

  •  wash/sanitize hands regularly
  • wear face coverings that fully cover both the nose/mouth
  • sit in the middle behind plexiglass barriers in dining areas
  • replace face coverings immediately after drinking/eating on campus and
  • maintain physical distancing.
There is uncertainty around the new variants of COVID-19 and there is still transmission of the virus in general each day.  If cases of COVID-19 increase once again, we may need to move back to the YELLOW alert level. "

Faculty Note

Alfred Hitchcock said, “Drama is life with the dull bits cut out.”

In Scriptwriting, we work on getting rid of all that is unnecessary in our scripts and heighten what is necessary and exciting for the drama. We slash out all dull bits to keep our audience engaged in the essence of the story.

There has been a lot written in recent years about how applying screenwriting principles to our lives can increase the quality of our days.

When it comes to the dull bits of life it is hard, if not impossible, to cut these out. Life is full of dull bits, especially these days as we have spent weeks inside due to cold temperatures and almost a year limiting social gatherings and fun outings. Sometimes our daily faith walk is full of so many dull bits that we don’t remember God’s movement and provisions within the day.

I appreciate Annie Dilliard’s words, “How we spend our days is indeed how we spend our years.” My prayer is that God will grant me the humility to see His work and calling, the heart to respond to the needs of others and the patience to praise our Lord for the day that he has made…including all of the dull bits.

What are your plans for the future?

After I graduate, I plan on pursing a career in the entertainment industry. Eventually getting to direct feature films. I’m excited to see where God leads me, and what he has in store for me. Less stressful if he makes the plan! I also plan on doing a lot more traveling, and documenting my trips

What opportunities have you had at UNW?

I’ve had plenty of opportunities at UNW, the first I can think of is being a student athlete. Getting to play sports at college has been a dream. Secondly I’ve had many student leadership opportunities. Getting to be on Exec Staff for Northwestern Productions, and serving as Marketing Director for the Five16 Film Festival.

What is your favorite thing about UNW?

My favorite thing at UNW is being mentored. From the soccer field to the classroom the relationships you can cultivate are powerful. The professors at UNW really care for their students, not only pertaining to the academics, but in their personal lives.

Where has life taken you after UNW?

Weeks before graduating from Northwestern in 2012, I landed an internship which resulted months later in full-time work with a top 10 U.S. marathon, the Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon by Twin Cities In Motion (@twincitiesinmotion). It was a whirlwind and dream job that I never could have predicted as a college student. I spent several years loving every minute of managing communications, launching their social platforms, micro and virtual event planning before it was cool!, controlling the website content and supporting strategic branding initiatives, not to mention becoming a marathoner and triathlete myself! 😉

Recently, I made the leap to something new! I’m still using my PR degree full-time at a large law firm in downtown Minneapolis (@fredlaw) (from home during the pandemic) and I’ve found a way to also leverage the soft skills of my PR degree, offering private birth doula services and volunteering at a nearby hospital.

Northwestern’s immersive internship requirements and real-world experience in class work was absolutely essential to helping me become the professional I am today. I’m very grateful.

What advice do you have for current students?

College is a bubble! Enjoy it, and keep the big picture in perspective. Say yes as often as you can, invest in your spiritual health, find mentors, read the news every once in a while, and remember that God has incredible things planned for your future, it begins with your ability to listen and respond to the small things today. Best wishes to you!!
