New Mexico Naturalist: Brooke Harper

Meet our latest New Mexico Naturalist, Brooke Harper. When Brooke was taken out of kindergarten due to COVID restrictions last spring, she started studying butterflies in earnest. Alongside her mother, she raised Painted Ladies and Monarchs at home and traveled around the state, netting and identifying as many butterflies as she could find! Science Fair Project Inspired by Bird Banding Field Trip!

This year, PEEC's virtual bird banding field trip with Bandelier National Monument inspired 5th-grader Ana Saenz to dig deeper and analyze a subset of the monument's bird-banding data. She looked at Audubon’s and Wilson’s Warblers and studied whether or not these birds had a healthy mass. Check out what she discovered through her project on our blog!

Dark Skies News

PEEC volunteer and head of the Jemez Mountains Night Sky Consortium, Galen Gisler, was featured in the Santa Fe New Mexican this past weekend! Learn about local efforts to preserve our night skies in this article. Plus, take the group's Night Sky Preservation survey here if you're interested in sharing your opinions on dark skies in Los Alamos County.

Nurturing Soil for a Healthy Climate
