4 Ways New Dietary Guidelines Support Dairy

The U.S. Departments of Agriculture and Health and Human Services recently released the 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, the cornerstone of official guidance on dietary recommendations for federal food assistance programs, such as those followed in our nation’s schools.

Key dairy highlights from the new Dietary Guidelines are:
  • Dairy remains its own food group
  • Three servings of dairy are still recommended each day
  • New guidelines for birth-23 months include yogurt and cheese as complementary foods
  • No changes to saturated fat recommendations
New Lesson Plans are a Hit!

This fall we invested in a digital K-3rd grade lesson plan for Fuel Up to Play 60. The breakfast focused lesson complemented 3-12 pieces developed last year. After a three month campaign to share the lessons and supported microsite, there were 4,349 website visits and 2,997 program downloads!

National Headlines

  • NMPF has created a COVID-19 vaccination guide for dairy farmers: Vaccinating essential workers, including the dairy workforce, is important because of their role in maintaining critical infrastructure operations and their increased risk of getting and spreading COVID-19. Vaccination is one of many important tools to help stop the pandemic. Visit the NMPF website for frequently-asked-questions about the vaccine and its rollout, and visit CDC’s website for more information.
  • DMI's "Dr. Cheese" Helps Launch Detroit-Style Pizza: DMI’s Nitin Joshi, known widely as “Dr. Cheese,” worked with his team and Pizza Hut on the recent launch of the chain’s cheese-rich Detroit-style pizza. We issued a press release about this, and the resulting piece in Dairy Foods sparked the article in PMQ Pizza Magazine, which has led to it appearing in various other outlets, such as Dairy Foods, DairyReporter.com, Hoard’s Dairyman, Cheese Market News and others.
  • Households with kids favor dairy, higher fat: A new study found that households with children reported purchasing more and higher-fat dairy products compared to households without children.
