EVENING
DEVOTIONS
WITH PASTOR ROSS
Not Your Battle

What a strange thing to tell someone who’s facing imminent danger.

I mean, Come on.

The Israelites have just been told that “a vast army” was marching their way.

A  coalition of three neighboring enemy nations were at that very moment closing in from the south with the intention of wiping Israel off the face of the earth.

(Sound familiar? Yeah, some things never change!)

Anyways.

The Israelites gather from all over and meet at the temple of the Lord in Jerusalem.

King Jehoshaphat fired off an incredible prayer, well worth reading before you go to bed (2 Chronicles 20).

Here’s just one line of that awesome prayer:

“For we have no power to face this massive army that is attacking us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you” (20:12).

(I have prayed that last line over and over throughout my life: I don’t have a clue, but my eyes are on you.)

So the Holy Spirit stirs up the heart of one of the more respected prophets of the day and he cries out:

Listen everyone. Here’s what the Lord says:

Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. This isn’t your battle, it’s Mine! says the Lord.

Just stand still in your places and see the saving power of the Lord work on your behalf, O Judah and Jerusalem. Do not be afraid or troubled. Go out against them tomorrow, for the Lord is with you” (20:15-17).

How can God tell us that the battle we face is actually, His battle, and not ours?

That’s an easy one.

We belong to Him (Psalm 100).
He is responsible for us (Psalm 23).
God takes good care of His valuables (Romans 12:19).

Solomon said the same thing, though with a little more passion:

I am my Beloved’s and my Beloved is mine.

God wants His kids to know: to mess with you, is to mess with Me (Zechariah 2:8).

So good news, my friends.

There’s a lot of hostility out there toward people like you and me.

People who take a stand for what’s right, live for Christ and uphold absolute (Biblical) truth are destined for pushback.

You’re going to take some heat if you try to live a godly life in these troubled times: that’s a promise you can count on (2 Timothy 3:12).

Just don’t forget about the other promise, too.

The battle’s not yours, says the Lord.

It’s Mine.
