ISLAM, EDUCATION AND THE CHILD
Was live on 15th December 2020
Learning and knowledge are central to Islam. These are naturally based on an idea of childhood and children, and how education constructs an adult. We will explore the position of various Islamic thinkers and institutions, from Deoband to Jamia Millia, from Syed Ahmad Khan to Maulana Azad, on education, in the light of the many current debates about the nature of Islam.

CHRISTIANITY, EDUCATION AND THE CHILD
Was live on 16th December 2020
India did not become directly converted to Christianity during the colonial period, but did become indirectly affected by Christianity in a multitude of ways. This lecture will discuss how the values of Christianity seeped into India’s educated leaders in ways that had a ripple effect on all the society.

CHILDHOOD, EDUCATION AND DALITS
Was live on 4th February 2021
The experience of being a “Dalit,” the most disempowered, bottom-of-the ladder position in the social ladder, is without argument the starkest experience possible in India. Education has been an approach to overcome this categorisation, but evidence shows that the caste identities linger on. Pedagogically, too, there is the dilemma: are all children in fact equal, or are some disadvantaged in an essential way?

CHILDHOOD, EDUCATION AND GENDER
Was live on 5th February 2021
All children - class differences aside - enjoy their childhood, lavished by love and revelling in their discovery of the world. When does the gender of the child start to matter? If we broaden our understanding of “education” we see that girls are socialized into femininity and boys into masculinity. What could be done to produce more gender-neutrality in childhood?
