Hello <<First Name>>,

Welcome to our fourth issue of The Data Economy Lab (DEL) newsletter! We've been heartened to see the growing commitment and intellectual investment in data stewardship throughout the ecoystem -  Mozilla Foundation's Data Futures Lab,  Ada Lovelace Institute's project on Participatory Data Governance, The Open Data Institute's program on Data Institutions, the Data Trusts UK initiative hosted by Cambridge University and the Digital Commoners community - represent just a few of these endeavours.

This also comes amidst evolving policy interest and action particularly in India and the EU. While we're glad to see greater recognition of data stewardship and responsible sharing protocol, much of this remains largely theoretical. To make these concepts actionable, many questions and concepts must still be addressed.

We're excited to tackle these questions collaboratively and are eager to continue sharing our insights with you as we go along!

Aapti Institute's Data Economy Lab - Building Blocks for Responsible Data Governance
Suha Mohamed
A recap of the Data Economy Lab's vision, methodology of research, learnings and future goals for 2021.  What are the open questions we're exploring? What has been the process we've used to deep dive into stewardship?
DEL Round-up: Papers, Blogs, Articles and Videos
Collective bargaining on digital platforms and data stewardship
Astha Kapoor
Featured in Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung's publication, this piece explores how models could enable workers to develop structures to increase their digital self-determination and support bargaining in a data-driven economy.
Nudging towards data equity: The role of stewardship and fiduciaries in the digital economy
Astha Kapoor & Richard S Whitt
Drawing from literature on community stewardship of environmental resources, the paper touches upon possible duties and business models for data stewards and digital fiduciaries.

Aapti's Submission on the Revised Report of the Committee on Non Personal Data

In our response to the revised Non-Personal Data Governance Framework report, we focused on several key concerns including how communities are defined and their proposed relationship with data principals. We engaged with the lack of grounding principles and a vision for giving users control over their data, while deploying a cumbersome regulatory structure adding cost across state, private and community stakeholders. We focus on the need for clear articulation of harms, and more specificity in data sharing requirements as an alternative to mandatory sharing.

Data Governance Deep Dives #1: The cooperative model

Amrita Nanda
Organised in partnership with the Digital Commoners Network, Aapti Institute has launched its first series of closed door events that bring together practitioners, researchers, academics, and other experts working on models to harness the value of data with the aim of redistributing power in the digital economy.

Launch: Aapti's Explainer Series - Data Stewardship
In an effort to drive accessible narratives around the Data Economy and Data Stewardship, we've created a short animated video that helps unpack: What is stewardship? What are the common models that exist? What are the key features and potential applications these frameworks enable?
It is time to build systems that allow for more democratic and human-centric data governance – in ways that make data accessible to enable innovation without compromising individual and community rights, agency, and security.

Launch: Aapti's Tracking Stewardship Series

In our new 'Tracking' series, we spotlight some of the conversations we’ve been having to understand the multiple ways in which stewardship can be structured and how this varies across data types, purpose and sector.

For our first video, we spoke to Ernst Hafen, the founder of MiData, a citizen owned health cooperative that offers a digital platform to securely store personal health data (genomic data, medical records, smartphone data).
During the discussion, we explore how individual and collective value of health data can be unlocked while giving us greater control and agency over its governance.

UNDP Rethinking Data Governance

We participated in the second in the series "Rethinking Data Governance: Exploring alternative ways to handle 'our' data. The discussion focused on how data governance can be reimagined for inclusive and sustainable development and exploring emerging data governance models.
