School and District News

Greetings Chapman Families,

As we continue Black History Month, I’d like to take an opportunity to celebrate Ida B. Wells-Barnett.  Born in Mississippi in 1862, Mrs. Wells-Barnett was a journalist, newspaper editor and, with her husband, newspaper owner Ferdinand L. Barnette, an early leader in the civil rights movement.  She was an active crusader against lynching and a champion of social and political justice for Black Americans. Her campaign against lynching helped to bring to light the injustice of the practice to the rest of the United States and the world. Ida also actively participated in efforts to gain the vote for women and simultaneously campaigned against racial bigotry within the women's movement.

Just recently, after much work and advocacy by their school community, the PPS Board of Education voted to change the name of Woodrow Wilson High School in southwest Portland to Ida B. Wells-Barnett High School.  The name change was effective immediately. Welcome to PPS, Ida B. Wells-Barnett High!

I hope you’ve had a chance to read the Parent Letter from PPS about the district’s plans to return to school in a hybrid model for our 4th Quarter in April, May and June. You should have also received a survey from me asking about your thoughts on returning to school in the 4th Quarter. Please check your email for a survey link. If you did not receive a link or tried to take the survey and it timed out, please fill out this form(4th Quarter Plans Link Request) and I can send you a new link.  If you are not ready to fill out your survey yet, I will be hosting a Parent Meeting this Friday at 9:30 to share information and take your questions. Please see above for the link. I will record the meeting for those who are unable to attend.

Successful Schools Survey - Take It Now

Dear Chapman Families,

The window for the Successful Schools Survey is currently open. Please take a few minutes to share your thoughts and feelings about Chapman using the survey link below.

We are excited to announce the 2021 Successful Schools Family Survey. When you take the survey, you help us understand your experience as a parent or guardian. This important information will guide us as we determine the future of our schools. The survey launches today and will be available for the next four weeks.

Take the survey today! You can complete the survey from a computer, tablet, or smartphone. It should only take 15-20 minutes of your time. Select the school your child attends and answer the questions for that school. If you have children at more than one PPS school, please complete one survey for each school your children attend. If you need help taking the survey please contact your teacher or principal.

Thank you for being part of the PPS family!

Girls on the Run: Sign Up Now

Registration for Girls on the Run is open this week and ends on Sunday Feb. 21st. >>Click here to register.

Girls on the Run is coming back to Wallace Park in April. Chapman girls in 3rd – 5th grade participated in the fall with two teams at Wallace Park. It was a great way to get the girls outside, keep moving their bodies and socialize while wearing a mask and social distancing.

There is a lottery prior to April practice to confirm your child’s spot on the team. Practices will be Tuesday and Thursday from 4:30 – 6:00 pm at Wallace Park. Our first practice is the week of April 12th.

Volunteer Coaches Needed:

We looking for volunteer coaches for the upcoming season. We need 3 coaches per team. You must be 18 years of age to coach. If anyone knows any local Lincoln High school students or college students looking for volunteer hours, please pass this along as they qualify to be assistant coaches.  It is a great opportunity to get experience empowering young girls.

If you are interested in coaching, learn more here and fill out this application. Coaches Applications are due by April 1st.

We’d love to have your girl involved and we are committed to making Girls on the Run accessible to all girls. Financial aid is available to any girl who needs it. The online registration form will walk you through a few questions to find the fee that is right for your family based on a sliding scale.

If you have questions or are interested, feel free to email your site liaisons:
