Job Negotiation Workshop w/Marvin Lopez
THIS Wednesday! Feb. 17th 6:00 - 6:45pm

Come to this exciting workshop hosted by Marvin Lopez where you'll learn how to successfully negotiate for a job, counter-offer, and much more! These are things that many underrepresented minorities in STEM fields might not feel comfortable advocating for and through this workshop you'll learn ways to feel empowered to negotiate in order to get what you deserve!

Pathways to STEM Research
Next Wednesday! Feb. 24th 7:00 - 8:00PM

We're excited to announce our Pathways to STEM research event in collaboration with Di from CALNERDS!

HES Big + Little Sign Ups

HES Big & Little Program Sign-Ups are open! Super excited to be providing the Big & Little Program for this academic school year! A little about the program:

The Big & Little program was created to offer undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to give/receive mentorship opportunities. It's a great way to make new friendships and connect with someone with a similar background as you.

  • Bigs provide resources and support to their Littles such as tutoring, schedule planning, resume help, and more!
  • We match Bigs and Littles based on their major, interests, and goals

HES Name Change Form

The "Hispanic" in Hispanic Engineers & Scientists (HES) doesn't fully represent who we are. Let's change it! Please rank your top five ideas for our new name in the form found HERE!. We will vote on whether or not to rename HES with the top ranked name at an upcoming event once the majority of our members have voted!

HES Garden
We are developing the HES student-run campus rooftop garden that intersects urban agriculture practices with technological systems (and other engineering/design aspects). The aim is to educate and provide HES active members with research and hands-on experiences (STEM and non-STEM) in team-oriented projects (with safety precautions). Also, one of the main goals is to increase accessibility and production of healthy foods. If interested, contact hestechgarden@gmail.com or aibarra20@berkeley.edu !!

HES Equity Team to Demand Changes
In the efforts to change L&S's and COE’s, and departments within both, diversity, equity, and inclusion, HES, with the help of Marvin Lopez (Director of Student Programs), is forming a team to have discussions and make requests to departments. We want to increase HES’s visibility within the colleges and demand policies that can help increase diversity, equity, and inclusion. This includes duties such as being involved in the hiring process for the Assistant Dean of Equity and Inclusion of COE and other faculty, to creating concrete and specific plans that can support COE’s, and the departments within, Latinx and Black students. If you are interested, please email guillermo.gonzalez@berkeley.edu

The Berkeley Engineering Design Scholar Program

The Berkeley Engineering Design Scholar Program is a 10-week summer research program open to all undergraduates in the College of Engineering or with relevant experience in design innovation. During the program, each Scholar is matched with a faculty advisor based on their interests, and conducts faculty-guided research in areas such as Engineering Design, Design Methodology, Human Computer Interaction, or Data-driven Design.
The program is open to all continuing Berkeley undergraduate students in the College of Engineering (COE). Students outside of COE with a track record of experience in design (e.g., Design Innovation courses at Jacobs) will also be considered. Student veterans, persons with disabilities, women, transfer students, and students of color are especially encouraged to apply. Participants must be matriculated Berkeley students at the time of the program.
Learn more at designscholar.jacobshall.org or attend the info session on February 26th. Applications for the summer 2021 cohort are due by March 7th.
