Of all peer reviewed scientific articles at the UvA, 63 percent was published in open access in 2019. This is a growth of almost 10 percentage point compared to 2018. What can researchers do to make even more articles open and reach the 100 percent in 2020? The ambition of the Netherlands is to achieve 100% open access. Why is it that the Eurocentric depreciation of ‘other’ cultures also applies to most European countries? How can we explain that the ‘national architecture’ of most European countries has been excluded from the architectural canon?  In ‘European Peripheries of Architectural Historiography’, a special issue of The Journal of Architecture, Petra Brouwer (UvA Art History) and Kristina Jõekalda (Estonian Academy of Arts) analyse Eurocentric tropes, such as othering, self-centering and self-inferiorising, from the inside of Europe (with case studies from 19th and 20th century Finland, Greece, Netherlands, Portugal and Switzerland). Read more

The Faculty of Humanities at the University of Amsterdam invites applications for two (2) visiting research fellowships in the field of Modern Greek Studies for early-career and more advanced scholars who wish to pursue part of their research at the University of Amsterdam. Applicants for both fellowships are required to hold a Ph.D. For the academic year 2021-2022, 1 fellowship will be offered to an early-career scholar (with a Ph.D. not earlier than 2015) for a period of 5 months, and 1 fellowship will be offered to a more experienced scholar (with a Ph.D. between 2001 and 2015) for a period of 5 months. The issues of discrimination and racism are more than ever at the heart of today’s debates in Europe, America and Africa since the killing of Georges Floyd by police officers in Minneapolis. The conference 'Decolonising the Memories of Enslavement' of the Université des Antilles and Le Mans Université at Schoelcher, Martinique on 7-9 December 2021, invites contributors to envision this collective rise of humanity through the lenses of literary, artistic and sociocultural creations which will be explored in order to reconsider memorial spaces and the representations of traumatic sites. The conference proposes to address how the memories of slavery in literature and the arts should be expressed and represented differently in the present day in order to decolonise minds and mentalities. The deadline for the call for proposals is 30 March 2021.
