May 1, 2021

Dear Friends,

First of May! Happy May Day!

There are a lot of traditions around this day, many involving feasting, singing, dancing, and great bonfires to celebrate the beginning of spring. When I was young, we used to always pick a bouquet of flowers, leave them on someone's doorstep, and then ring the doorbell and run.

I won't be celebrating fertility or dancing around a Maypole this year; however, gifting flowers seems like a good tradition to honor on this day.

And so - to one and all - I send you this bouquet! (Dandelions are some of my favorites!) Thank you for your support! May your day be filled with sunshine and joy!

P.S. Hope you like my recent blogpost: Build Soil; Store More Water; Grow More Plants; Save the Planet (Part II). I've been digging (literally and figuratively) into soil lately - and the relationships among soil organisms, organic matter, water conservation, plant growth, carbon sequestration, the water cycle, climate change, and ultimately saving the planet (whew!). A somewhat nerdy post, perhaps, but I really love learning about this stuff. I recognize my posts would be shorter if I would learn to narrow down the topic!
Also - Check out the front page of the Barbolian.com website for the short version of the latest garden updates.

Cherry blossoms fall like snow in spring!
So beautiful!
Morel Harvest
Morels! Never can seem to find many when we go on the hunt, but step out our backdoor, and there they are everywhere in the mulch!
Lettuce Sign in the Garden
Our 4-yr old granddaughter wanted to write the sign for the lettuce in the garden. I warned her there were a lot of letters. She made them all fit! Gardening with kids is the best!
Frog in the greenhouse! Yay! I hope it eats baby slugs! We've also seen a snake and some paper wasps. They are a great help in insect control.
