February 2021:
Update and Outdoor Season Preview

February 17th, 2021
Dear KTFC Community,

With the indoor season coming to an end at the end of March, we would like to provide an update and some important information in preparation for the outdoor season beginning in April.

Although there was limited opportunities to compete indoors this season, we are thankful that athletes have been able to continue training safely over the winter. The Public Health Officer, Bonnie Henry, alluded to restrictions being "loosened" for youth sport at the end of February in her last provincial update on the 5th of February, so there is some hope on the horizon. The move outdoors will also, inevitably, provide a more conducive setting to safely operate our programs with more space and fresh air!

Indoor Season Competition Update

The decision was made amongst the KTFC Board of Directors to hold off on hosting any further "In-Club Youth Performance Trials" (track meets) for the indoor season. Although we were granted approval from BC Athletics and viaSport, the restrictions related to limiting volunteers and officials within the TCC made the events too difficult to execute.

New Mondo Track for 2021

If you haven't heard already, the City of Kamloops recently approved a 2 million dollar Hillside Stadium track upgrade! The City approved a premium Mondotrack surface as the replacement which is world renowned for being the fastest and highest quality surface available. For the full story, CLICK HERE.

Coaches Dylan Armstrong and Gary Reed were instrumental in educating decision makers on the importance of the update and installing this particular surface. We'd like to extend our appreciation for their efforts.

The work is projected to begin in August of 2021. We foresee minimal impact to our programming. Nonetheless, we will ensure we have approval to move indoors if need be.

Grants Awarded

Pacific Sport

KTFC recently received a $500 and $2,500 donation from Pacific Sport. The Club will be purchasing a new "Run, Jump, and Throw" bag for the Mini Track Rascals program which has proven to be a sustainable and enjoyable program.

Kamloops Sport Legacy Foundation

The Club was awarded a grant of $7,910 from the Kamloops Sports Legacy Foundation. These funds will be used to purchase the following:
  • Two pole vault poles requested by Coach Mike Kern
  • Throwing equipment for the JD program (javelins, shot puts, discuses and hammers) to support the program's growth
  • 1 hammer and 10 hammer handles for Coach Dylan Armstrong's group
  • An official's measuring stick for high jump and pole vault
A sincere thank you to the Kamloops Sports Legacy Foundation for their continued support. KTFC has received $125,123 since 2009 from the Foundation. These funds have been crucial to the success of our programs.

Current Restrictions for Sport

On February 5th, 2021 the Provincial Health Officer extended the standing restrictions for sport until further notice. The latest update from BC Athletics, can be read in full HERE.

* Please note the following correction to the last newsletter sent to membership:

  • Training for athletes 22+ is NOT fully suspended. Training is permitted, but is limited to 2 athletes OR 1 athlete and 1 coach indoors and 4 athletes OR 3 athletes and 1 coach outdoors.

NEW KTFC Protocol: COVID Exposures

We would like to remind everyone of the following protocol as per the KTFC COVID Safety Plan (adapted from BC Athletics):

  • Any person who lives in a home or has been in close contact with someone who has been told to self-isolate or who has tested positive for COVID-19, is NOT permitted to attend practice or training venues.

* We have recently clarified with public health that the period of self-isolation for "close contacts" would be 14 days. Only public health can determine who is a "close contact" and provide sound advice. Please phone 811 for health directives.

Most importantly, please continue to conduct thorough health assessments on your athlete/s before attending practice.

Thank you.
