Ash Wednesday Worship

Posted Online by Noon February 17

We begin our 40-day observance of Lent, with this service which includes: music, a reflective prayer of our mortality and sorrow over the many lives lost to the coronavirus; Scripture meditation of Moses’ encounter with God in the burning bush; the Lord’s Supper; an invitation to journey with Jesus to the cross.

Within this service, we will offer the opportunity to deepen your worship at home with two interactive elements that can be done as part of the worship experience or on their own.

Lenten Sermon Series:
 Look to Jesus

During a time of crisis, television host Mr. Rogers reminded children what his mom told to him as a child, “when you are feeling sad and overwhelmed by what you see, look to the helpers” – people who are there to care for people in need.  In a similar way, Scripture directs us to look to Jesus as the source and means of renewing our faith, framing our identity, and determining our purpose.  During the Covid-19 health crisis and our emergence from its threat and restrictions we’ll reflect on the revelatory “I Am” sayings of Jesus from the Gospel of John to clarify our priorities and sense of direction.

Sunday February 21

Pastor Kent begins our new sermon series based on the “I Am” sayings of Jesus from John chapter 8 and 9:  “Jesus—the Light of the World.”

This series will run eight weeks.

Video discussion facilitated by
Michelle Huntley, Penny Cleary, Rich Mason, and Mark Thomas

February 24 Theme:  The Case for The Color of Compromise

March 3 Theme:  Making Race in the Colonial Era
and Understanding Liberty in the Age of Revolution and Revival

Are you interested in joining the conversation about race? Consider journeying with us as we go through The Color of Compromise by Jemar Tisby. This work tells the history of race in our country thought the lens of the Church. Of this work Pastor Thabiti Anyabwile stated: “Tisby points courageously toward the open sore of racism - not with the resigned pessimism of the defeated but with the resilient hope of Christian faith.”

This material is available as: a paper book; an electronic audio book or eBook from the Sonoma County library; a DVD which can be purchased or loaned (by us) or available on a streaming network. The book and video cover the same material so any format you choose will give you plenty to join our discussion group. If you have questions about how to access this material in any of the formats or would like a scholarship to purchase this material, please contact Mark Thomas (707) 292-5788 or by email.

Your weekly (approximately 40 minute) investment will be to watch a short video (or two) or read or listen to a chapter or two before our Wednesday evening meeting. We will have discussion questions for each week and will use our time together to share our responses to this compelling material in conversations in community via zoom. We would love to have you join the conversation.
