Campus photo in evening with snow on ground, lights in windows

February LCIRT News

As warm as our campus looks above in the evening snow, we take heart with our fellow northerners that each week now brings more daylight. Spreading further light this month is Dr. Sheila Ross, one of our professional certificate graduates transforming engineering education at her university by implementing neurodiversity-friendly changes. We also share a few event announcements: a presentation on hybrid learning and dual enrollment on February 25 and a series of four "Navigating the Workplace" talks by corporate and education leaders in April. For readings on grading practices, social/emotional learning, and thinking scaffolds, we offer our suggestions in LCIRT Recommends.

While unconventional thinking drives innovation in engineering, the path through an engineering education can discourage students who learn and think in an unconventional way. Dr. Sheila Ross of the Milwaukee School of Engineering, a graduate of the Landmark College professional certificate program in Executive Function and LD, was recently interviewed in PRISM, a publication of the American Society for Engineering Education, about the changes she has implemented in her university’s engineering programs to support and leverage the talents of students with learning disabilities, ADHD and autism.

Dr. Ross describes some of the challenges faced by neurodiverse engineering students—from teamwork to lecture notes to submitting work—and the often simple changes that can make the curriculum more accessible to all learners.
