A Day with Black Professionals:
Trailblazing: Setting the Path for a Legacy
February 27, 11:00 am - 4:00 pm


Many young Black professionals see themselves entering careers where they may be "the only one" or "one of a few", making the experience in the workforce, or academia a daunting experience. This event consists of industry-specific rooms where Black professionals will share their career development/journey and students will have an opportunity to learn about the professionals' experience navigating their identity and work.  Register here.
 
Ensuring machine learning for healthcare works for all

Recent developments in machine learning and AI technologies hold some promise to address the issues with the generation of scientific evidence and human decision making. Healthcare is flawed, and it must be reformed so that it equitably benefits all. Preliminary heats: March 9 - 18


The School of Graduate Studies is happy to announce this year’s 3 Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition.  The 3MT is a unique opportunity for graduate students at all levels to not only share their unique research with a broad audience, but also practice explaining their research in an engaging, accessible, and compelling manner.  Register here, and find more information at uoft.me/3MT.
The Gender Lady

Join IMSSA Community and Outreach to watch the astonishing documentary: The Gender Lady: The Fabulous Dr. May Cohen. Dr. May Cohen is an amazing Canadian physician and a women’s rights activist. She is well known for her contributions and advocacy in women’s health, sexuality, abortion choice, and human rights. This documentary takes you through Dr. May Cohen’s life, career, and her extensive gender equity and human sexuality contributions. Register here.

Academic Success and the Innovation Hub want to hear from you to gain a deeper understanding of what it’s like to experience failure. You are invited to contribute thoughts online and/or opt-in for one of our virtual dialogue-based sessions. Those participating in the virtual sessions will receive a $10 gift card as a thank you. Fill out the survey by March 8.

Massey College Junior Fellows Applications.

Massey College is an interdisciplinary college within UofT’s St. George Campus. Its community includes graduate students, distinguished senior scholars and eminent members of society beyond the academic world. Junior Fellows are full-time students registered with the School of Graduate Studies at the University of Toronto, or pursuing professional degrees such as dentistry, law, or medicine. The IMS International Community group is excited to invite you to its inaugural seminar series event on Feb. 26 from 2-3 pm. Dr. Pedro Elias Marques from the Rega Institute for Medical Research in Belgium will give a talk on "Moving Around the World in Academic Life: A Personal Perspective". All are welcome to attend

Planning Analytics Summer Co-op

The Planning Analytics team is part of the Planning & Budget department that provides institutional support for academic planning & analysis, budget administration, institutional analytics, and data governance. The Planning Analytics team provides a suite of reporting and analytics services in support of Institutional Planning and Budget Analysis. Under the supervision of the Planning Analytics Project Lead, this Co-op position will support the development and organization of business process documentation and data. Learn more here.

6. Did you know?

A PhD student becomes a PhD candidate once they have an approved thesis topic, have completed all course requirements with a registered grade, and have held at least 4 PAC meetings. The candidacy designation should only be used once these requirements have been met.

7. Graduate Coordinators Office Hours

Tuesdays from 9:00 - 10:00 am

The IMS Graduate Coordinators, Dr. Lucy Osborne and Dr. Vasu Venkateswaran, will be holding weekly virtual office hours.

You are invited to join the meeting to ask the Graduate Coordinators your program-related questions (you will be placed in a waiting room until they are ready to see you). If you would like to discuss more personal matters, please contact them directly to set up a meeting.
